4  A Season of Terror Vs. 1-9 (II Chron. 28)  Vs. 4 – 2 imperatives  Restrain yourself outwardly  Calm your mind inwardly  Vs. 5-9 – Great prophecy about the enemy’s plans and future  The Lord was in charge.  But if Judah would not hold fast to its God it would lose its fast hold of its country.

5  The Sign - Ask a sign Vs. 10-16  Was Ahaz silent? – a secret alliance in the works?  But God is gracious  Sign - something serving as a pledge of the divine certainty of something else.  A visible miracle  A predicted future event – not foreseen.  The virgin – Double ref. – foreshadowing – typology!  Near or partial fulfilment  One of the king’s wives? Maybe Abijah – the mother of Hezekiah!  Far and primary fulfillment - the Messiah!  The Messiah is mentioned again:  Ch. 9 – actually born  Ch. 11 – reigning

6  This sign was finally fulfilled in the birth of Christ.  He is the Messiah of Isa. 7:14.  The core or crux of His coming is found in this verse!  We know this was the primary and final fulfillment because of the careful wording of Matt. 1:22,23  Matthew 1:22-23 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."
