Substituting We evaluate (find the value of) an expression by substituting values for the unknown into the expression
2
How many will we need? Federico is organising a party for his friends He uses these rules to work out what he needs P = people Cake or C = p/4 + 3 Drinks or D = 3(p + 1) Pizza = (P + 4)/ 4 Tables or T = p/4 + 1 Cookies or C = P4 + 8 If the whole of Year 7 (44 people)were going to his party how much of each would he need
3
BIDMAS (or, PEMDAS) Bracket Indices Divisions and Multiplication Addition and Subtraction e.g. In 4 + 3a, the multiplication is worked out before the addition In 4 – a 2, the square is worked out before the subtraction In 4(x – 8), the expression in the brackets is worked out first
4
Find the value of 1.2a 2 + 6 when a = 3 2.10 – 4b when b = 1.5 3.2x + 9/x when x = -3
5
Quickfire quizzer Question 4 5 minutes
6
Find the value of these when n = 1.5 1.2n + 3 2.4n – 1 3.3(n + 1.5) 4.5(8 – 2n) 5.10 – 4n
7
Find the value of these when x = 3.6 1.5x 2.5x - 3 3.10x - 4 4.24 - 5x 5.4(x - 3
8
Plan an event Come up with expressions or rules that could be used to help you plan an event You would evaluate the expression by substituting values for the unknown into the expression The event is up to you
