Why Do I Need the Old Testament? Part 1
3
Why Do I Need the Old Testament? Primary views concerning the O.T. – Irrelevant to Christians, useless – Its laws apply today, combined with the N.T. – It’s profitable, but its laws are not binding
4
What the Old Testament is 3 Divisions (Luke 24:44) – Law (Moses, Pentateuch, Torah) Gen, Exo, Lev, Num, Deut – Prophets Josh, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isa, Jer, Ezek “Twelve” (Hos, Joel, Amos, Obad, Jonah, Micah, Nah, Hab, Zeph, Hag, Zech, Mal) – Writings (Psalms) Psa, Prov, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lam, Eccl, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Neh, Chron 15 th century BC to 5 th century BC Mostly Hebrew, portions in Aramaic
5
What the Old Testament is Includes the Law of Moses – Law of Moses (Exodus 19 – Deuteronomy 34) – Binding covenant for Israel only (Deut. 5:1-3) – Binding from Sinai to the cross (1446 BC – 30 AD) – Law of Moses is a small part of the O.T. Scripture (Rom. 1:1-3) – Inspired (II Tim. 3:16; Acts 1:16; II Peter 1:20-21) – True (John 10:35; 17:17; Prov. 30:5) – Profitable (II Tim. 3:16-17) – Studied by Christians (I Tim. 4:13)
6
What the Old Testament is Not Not a system of law for us – No longer under that guardian (Gal. 3:24-26) – Released from that Law (Rom. 7:6) – Nailed to the cross (Col. 3:11-14; Eph 2:15) Not sufficient for salvation – Could not free us (Acts 13:39) – Sacrifices could not take away sin (Heb. 10:1-11) Not useless (II Tim. 3:16) – It’s the first part of the story
7
Applying the Old Testament Properly Prepare the world for Christ – Identifying the Messiah (or Christ) Jesus (John 5:46-47) Philip (John 1:45) Apollos (Acts 18:28) – Confirming the gospel (Acts 17:11)

11
Facts & Figures 10% of the N.T. is direct references to O.T. 1 out of every 22.5 N.T. verses is an O.T. quote – On average, every page of the N.T. contains an O.T. quote – There are many more indirect references What does that tell us about the importance of studying the O.T.?
12
Why Do I Need the Old Testament? Understanding the gospel – Foreshadowing Priestly ministry – a copy, shadow (Heb. 8:5) Noah’s ark – a type/figure (I Peter 3:21) Adam – a type (Rom. 5:14) – Language Words, concepts, symbolism borrowed from O.T. John’s Revelation requires knowledge of prophets – 278 of 404 verses in Revelation contain O.T. references, mostly Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel
13
Applying the Old Testament Properly Written for our example (I Cor. 9-10) – Christian life is a race (9:24-27) Paul disciplined himself to make sure he wasn’t “disqualified” from that race (9:27) – Israelites were on a similar journey (10:1-4) Most of them were “disqualified” (10:5) – Idolatry (Exo. 32) – Sexual immorality (Num. 25) – Complaining/testing God (Num. 21) – A lesson in perseverance (10:6, 11-14; Heb. 3-4)
14
Applying the Old Testament Properly Written for our instruction (Rom. 15) – We must be patient and build one another up Follow Christ’s example of endurance (Psa. 69:9) – We must maintain our hope to the end God’s faithfulness is proven in the O.T. Promise to Abraham fulfilled (Heb. 6:9-20) You have to know the story of Abraham to benefit from this N.T. passage (Gen. 22:16-18) The O.T. gives us hope and confidence in God’s promises
15
Applying the Old Testament Properly Makes us wise concerning salvation (II Tim. 3) – Timothy had been taught the “sacred writings” (O.T.) (II Tim. 3:14-15) – These are able to make us “wise for salvation” Sin, the need for salvation Reveals first part of God’s plan of salvation Points forward to the Savior and his sacrifice Teaches us the endurance and obedience we need
16
Applying the Old Testament Properly Applications from laws and principles – We must distinguish between law and fact – Law: Remember the Sabbath day (Exo. 20:8) The laws were abolished – Fact: In six days, God created everything, and he rested on the seventh day (Exo. 20:11) The facts do not change – We can still learn lessons from the laws Consequences (Num. 15:32-36) Foreshadowing (Heb. 4:9)
17
Applying the Old Testament Properly Applications from laws and principles – O.T. principles explain N.T. laws Wisdom required of us (Eph. 5:15; Col. 4:5) Proverbs is a collection of facts about wise living – Universal truths (Prov. 15:1; 6:16-19) – Material for N.T. worship Singing required (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) No N.T. examples of songs Content based on O.T. songs (Moses, David, etc) “Singing PSALMS, hymns, and spiritual songs”
