Shot analysis BY JOSE HERNANDEZ

The Dominant in this shot is the character Dana -Size: She is the biggest object in the shot. -Focus: She is the only object that is focus (besides the couch) -Lighting: Unlike the background, Dana is eliminated by lights around her out of frame -Color: Dana is wearing a dark blue jacket, while the background is composed of brown, and grey colors.

Lighting The light in this shot is only found in the two parts, the background (the lamp which is part of the scene) and around the character Dana. The reason why the background is barely lit is to create a shadows and a creepy affect, since it’s a horror movie. The other light is found around Dana, most of the light is coming from the left side of Dana’s face (out of frame) and tiny bit of light can be found the top right of Dana, the reason why she is highlighted is because she is a main character and to distract the audience from the back ground (will discuss later.)

Type of Shot: Close Up Dana is playing Truth or Dare with the rest of the character, when it comes to her turn the camera zooms In on her to create a close up. Which shows Dana’s reaction/emotion to the Truth or Dare, One of the character metions how she usually says truth but then changes her mind saying she really wanted dare. Which is the reason she has a smirk to the comment that one of the character says.

Camera Angle: Eye-level shot A real-world angle, it shows Dana as the audience would expect her to react in real life, tries to relate to the audience with a situation that they could relate to.

Symbolism of Colors In the background black and brown can be seen throughout the shot, the black would represent that the mystery of the cabin in which the character are in, which is the reason why throughout most of the movie is very dark and in shadows, the dark brown itself give the cabinet a very dressing tone. The dark blue that Dana wears symbolizes how important she is, since she is one of the important movies, the dark blue also represents her stability, she remains composed throughout movie.

Lens: Wide-angle lens Wide-angle lens were used to capture the broad area which the shot is held in, which can be see by the vast background of the shot.(The reason why will be discuss later)

Density There are a lot of the object behind in the back ground, however the shot is not very dense, because the shot only limits the viewer to the main object: Dana.

Form: Open - The shot does not seem highly composed, the shot is natural simple and unstructured, as it cuts off a portion of the set. Not all of the information is contained in the one shot, as can be seen by the table and lamp stance being cut off.

Framing: Tight Dana has not room to move around, since she is placed at the edges of the frame, of the empty space behind her.

Depth of Field: Shallow The shot is shallow because only one plane is focus, Isolating Dana fro the rest of the room, because the shot is focusing on how she is feeling/reacting.

Character placement Dana is position close to the left edge of the shot, and the reason is because the empty space right of her is actually very important in advancing the plot of the story.

Staging Positions: Full Front The position of the most intimacy, which shows us her reactions to the following event that will happen and the question that her friends will ask.

Subsidiary Contrast The main subsidiary contrast in the shot would be the trapdoor behind Dana. The trapdoor is non-existent, Dana is asked a question and the audience focus on her and wait, until the trap door is revealed with a slight jump scare. The shot is designed and composed to have the audience focus on Dana and then scare them with the trapdoor.

Rule of Thirds -Eyes around the powerpoints - As she is one of two important objects in the frame, she is position in the first horizontal line of the grid. - -The empty space is position in the second horizontal line of the

How it fits together The close up on Dana, is because she is suppose to attract the audience which is reason she is in focused and is very close to the camera. While the audience is waiting for Dana’s response they tunnel on Dana not paying attention to the background. Which leads to the jump scare which the audition is completely unaware, ( it wouldn’t be a horror movie with out a jump scare or two.)
