Mixed Age Planning in Primary Languages More than 20% of KS2 classes are mixed age (DCSF 2005)
5
an overview of the mixed age issue framework linked key concepts related to achieving progression in a mixed age language class Norfolk’s approach…long medium and short term
6
National distribution of primary schools with 51 to 100 pupils on roll – 2002 National distribution of primary schools with 1 to 50 pupils on roll – 2002

Cornish schools are used to this issue! 1. Long term planning of a rolling programme to revisit key processes or concepts 2. Medium term planning choosing varied resources or contexts to revisit key processes or concepts 3. Short term planning: (a)As New Pupils (NP) encounter a ‘process or concept’ for the first time… (b)Plan for differentiated activities or outcomes as opportunities for ‘Returning Pupils’ (RP) to show/achieve progression (Joan Dickie, Norfolk) In all curriculum areas mixed age planning must consider:
8
What sort of rolling programme for languages? These are some suggestions: 2 stable classes (Y3/4, Y5/6) All KS2 in one class? 3 KS2 classes (3/4;4/5;5/6) Also… Do class mixes vary from year to year?...!!! Is there a KS1/KS2 mix? Eg 2/3+ 4/5/6 A 2 year roll A 4 year roll A 5 year roll??

The KS2 Framework for Languages part 3 p117 -129

Progression in language learning in mixed age KS2 classes Norfolk’s rolling programmes and planning refers to new pupils (NP) And returning pupils (RP) Returning pupils will develop: Increased CONFIDENCE in e.g. listening and speaking, reading and writing…using language independently! Increased UNDERSTANDING of e.g. meaning of words, grammar, culture, language links Increased COMPLEXITY e.g. saying more, developing accuracy, asking questions, developing literacy skills etc.… (Joan Dickie, Norfolk)
11
Progression in KS2 Understand a little more & apply past knowledge Learn about new concepts and skills Understand & apply more confidently Understand & apply more independently Increased understanding Increased confidence Increased complexity
12
Revisit key language concepts/skills such as gender/adjectives but vary the context each year e.g. Year A: un crayon rouge, une gomme grise Year B: un chat noir, une souris blanche Year C: un pull bleu, une robe rose Plan activities for returning pupils to apply concepts with increasing confidence, understanding and complexity e.g. recognise gender apply gender with help apply without help Expectations for RP when revisiting key concepts eg gender & adjectival agreement: KAL Plan activities for new pupils to recognise and begin to apply concepts
13
Planning for new/returning pupils... with Framework links to IU (Intercultural Understanding) Revisit relevant IU objectives such as: IU 3.2 Locate countries IU 3.2 Locate countries IU 4.4 Learn how to travel there IU 4.4 Learn how to travel there IU 5.2 recognise similarities and differences IU 5.2 recognise similarities and differences Plan for new pupils to participate in discussion/research Plan for returning pupils to lead discussion/research with increasing confidence and understanding As a Y4 RP I am going to research different ways to travel to France As a Y3 NP I am finding out where France is
14
RECAP! Successful mixed age PL planning will include : 1: Long term: Identify the key skills and structures to revisit in a rolling programme 2: Medium term: Choose different resources or contexts for revisiting the key structures or skills 3: Short term: Plan for (framework linked) opportunities/activities for Returning Pupils to show increased: when revisiting vocabulary, structures, concepts and skills they have met before especially when…… confidence; understanding; complexity Asking and answering questions!
15
Celebrating mixed ages! The revisiting of key language structures and skills is excellent PL practice Returning pupils will be able to: develop their confidence, understanding & complexity in oracy and literacy skills, in particular questioning apply and extend their knowledge of KAL and LLS reinforce their understanding of IU objectives be motivated to use the new language in particular whilst helping younger pupils
