Intro to IT, 3 rd Quarter
2
First things first, you all did a fine job with your presentations. That being said, there were some anomalous errors and overall we need a little more overview on using Office. After we’re done reviewing Office, we’ll be moving into Adobe Dreamweaver and Web Design.
3
Well, for starters, it’s in the curriculum. ◦ Good enough for me. Secondly, it’s handy to know and understand, as more than you expect runs on HTML and web coding logic. ◦ iOS/Android apps, mobile sites, heck even things like ATMs Third, being certified as “Knowledgeable” in Dreamweaver is worth a TON in the real world. Even with no college ambitions you can join a web design firm more easily with it. (40k a year to start if you’re any good… you can live on that) ◦ And if you DO go to college, it can sometimes be used to waive your entry level computer course, so… yay more electives!
4
Office has some nifty features beyond the basic “type and go” that a lot of you use it for. Knowing these little things sets you apart, and makes your stuff look that much better. For instance, in Word: ◦ Indents ◦ Margins ◦ Tabs ◦ Columns ◦ Page Breaks ◦ Bookmarks ◦ Headers ◦ Footers ◦ Page Numbers ◦ Citations ◦ Mail Merge (Advanced) ◦ Commenting
5
Excel has some super useful stuff inside of it, such as: ◦ Cell Formatting ◦ Cell Renaming ◦ Borders ◦ Fills ◦ Conditional Formatting ◦ Formulas ◦ Data Bars ◦ Charts
6
When it comes to PowerPoint: ◦ Nah kids. ◦ You know your way PowerPoint pretty well. ◦ Your presentations were on point, even though your dress code wasn’t always on point. ◦ It’s hard to suck at PowerPoint. ◦ I can’t stop saying Point. ◦ Ahhh someone point at me and laugh. ◦ Auuuugh! ◦ Point.
7
Indents and tabs Indents and tabs are super easy to set up, and require only the ruler at the top of your document. First-Line Indent marker Hanging Indent marker (Above) Left Indent marker (Attached below)
8
By clicking on the ruler, you can create custom tabs. Tabs can be set up at varied spacing if you need it, and each tab can be different. Marker indicating a custom tab
9
Columns can be made from specific selections of text, or applied to the document as a whole.
10
Look for Columns in your Page Layout tab (Layout tab on Mac)
11
For me, one of the most useful little tricks in Word is to simply break the page and force Word to start typing on the next page. …Instead of you spamming the enter key to the bottom of the page to get there. Then you add text later and everything just goes right down the toilet as text gets bumped and jostled. In in the Insert tab, or Ctrl+Enter on Windows. It is Command+Enter on Mac. (Enter is the leftmost button on the number pad, though. Page Breaks are also sorted into the Layout tab on Mac, not the Insert tab like on PCs)
13
Sweet, uneditable space!
14
A feature that was actually used in the Second Quarter Rubric, this allows you set up a reference point in your document that you can link to for fast travelling around a paper.
16
Insert Tab, Click on Bookmark Name your Bookmark:
17
Start by right-clicking the text you want to link to your bookmark:
18
Choose location as “Place in This Document” Choose your bookmark. Easy!
19
For papers in college, this is going to be used a lot. Like, a lot a lot. A lot. The Insert tab will have Headers, Footers, and Page Numbers all together. (Document Elements tab on Mac)
20
Additionally, when working in Header or Footer space, you can add special features such as: Date/Time, Pictures, and rules for how Page Numbering and such behave.
21
A great way to leave your opinions all over a document, you can mark up and judge the heck out of somebody’s work without damaging it using the Comment system.
22
The Review tab lets you set comments wherever your cursor is positioned.
