PARTS OF A PROMPT: Tells you where to get the information to help you respond to the prompt. A PARTICULAR STORY, DOCUMENT A PARTICULAR SECTION OF A STORY, DOCUMENT NOTES ON A PARTICULAR TOPIC A CHART, GRAPH, MAP, OR PICTURE LIFE EXPERIENCE PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE

PARTS OF A PROMPT: Asks you a question or instructs you to complete a specific task in your response. Examples: Compare/contrast two characters. Explain how something works. Explain why a character acts the way he/she does. Identify the location and meaning of information in a document. Give your opinion on a topic.

VERB-WHAT Another strategy you should use in addition to the “parts” of the prompt strategy is the “verb-what” strategy. List all of the verbs in the prompt that give you a direction in the left-hand column. List all of the “whats” in the right hand column. The “what” is the task the verb is commanding you to do. Let’s try it with the prompt.
