Backshore Part of the beach reached only by the highest tides & storm waves. BACKSHORE

Backshore A. Sand DuneA hill or ridge of sand shaped by wind, can be topped with vegetation. B. Winter A berm that is set back further on Berm the beach b/c strong storms during the winter erode the beach away. C. Scarp A ledge of sand formed by the cutting action of storm waves. D. Summer A low, almost horizontal plateau Berm on the beach. Occurs between the dunes & the high tide line.

Foreshore Area of the beach with lots of wave action. Spans from the high tide line to beyond the surf zone. FORESHORE BACKSHORE

Foreshore E. Beach Face The seaward sloping section of the beach between high & low tides. F. Beach TerraceThe flat, nearly level area of the beach between the low tide line & the offshore trough.

Offshore The section of the coast that spans from the surf zone to the edge of the continental shelf. OFFSHORE FORESHORE BACKSHORE

Offshore G. Trough A depression running parallel to the shore, hollowed out by wave action & currents. H. Sand Bar A ridge of sand formed by waves & longshore currents. I. Storm Bar An offshore sandbar which can be deposited by a storm. Typically occurs farther out than a longshore sand bar.
