Drill Press Safety Livonia Churchill High School Industrial Technology

Drill Press The drill press is used primarily for drilling and boring holes. At high speeds it can be used for shaping and routing.

Drill Press The size of the drill press is determined by the largest diameter stock that can be drilled through the center. If the distance from the column to the center of the table is 8”, then the size of the drill press is 16”. TABLE COLUMN

4 Drill Press Parts TABLE HEIGHT CRANK HANDLE BASE TABLE KEY CHUCK SWITCH MOTOR COLUMN SUPPORT LOCK HANDLE FEED LEVER DEPTH SCALE LOCK

5 Inserting and Removing Drills 1.Place the chuck key (A) into the side keyhole of the chuck (B), meshing the gear teeth (C). 2.Turn the chuck key counterclockwise to open the chuck jaws (D). 3.Insert a drill bit into the chuck far enough to obtain maximum gripping of the chuck jaws. 4.Center the drill bit in the chuck jaws before final tightening of the chuck. 5.Use the chuck key for the final tightening to make sure the drill bit will not slip while drilling.

6 Adjusting the Table Height Table Height Crank Handle Support Lock Handle 1.Loosen the Support Lock Handle. 2.Turn the Table Height Crank Handle. 3.Tighten the Support Lock Handle. Do not over- tighten. Over-tightening can strip the threads!!!

7 Adjusting the Drilling Depth Depth Scale 1.Loosen the Depth Scale Lock. 2.Set the Depth Scale to ZERO. 3.Use the Feed Lever to bring the Drill down to the desired drilling depth. Tip: Mark a pencil Line on the side of the piece. 4. Tighten the Depth Scale Lock to lock it. Do not over-tighten!!! Depth Tension Knob

8 Safety Rules Always wear your safety glasses. Keep hair and loose clothing away from moving parts.

9 Safety Rules Make sure the drill is centered in the three jaws of the chuck. Tighten it securely. Always remove the key before turning the power on! 3” rule for your fingers! Small pieces should be held in a vice.

10 Safety Rules Always keep a piece of wood on the table to protect it. Drill to the proper depth.

11 Safety Rules Concentrate on your task. Do not interrupt others while they are using power equipment. Stay at least 3 feet away from someone working on a machine. Dude!Whats up! Never walk away and leave a machine unattended.

12 Safety Rules Keep the work area clean. Scrap wood or tools on the floor or the drill press table may cause accidents and injuries.
