2 Safety Rule #1 Open flames are not allowed without first obtaining a permit. The exception to this rule is during a period of closely supervised instructions, such as science labs, where all appropriate safety measures have been put into place. Section 308.3 & 105.6

3 Safety Rule #2 Electric, kerosene and other portable heaters are not approved or permitted in educational occupancies. NC Dept. of Public Instructions Insurance Fund

4 Safety Rule #3 Exit doors must be easily recognized as a means of egress and clearly marked by a sign reading “EXIT”. The doors cannot have any type of decorations and other materials on them. Section 1008.1 & 10011.5.1

5 Safety Rule #4 All exit routes must be free and unobstructed. No material, flammable furnishings, decorations or equipment may be placed, either permanently or temporarily within the exit path. Section 315.2.2 & 29 CFR 1910.37(a)(3)

6 Safety Rule #5 You cannot hang anything from an acoustical ceiling system. When storing items on shelves or on top of cabinets, there has to be two feet of space between the ceiling and items stored. Section 703.3

9 Safety Rule #8 – Extension and flexible cords shall not be a substitute for permanent wiring. They shall be grounded and maintained in good condition without splices or signs of deterioration. Section 605.5

10 Safety Rule #9 Windows and/or blinds must remain free of combustible material to allow for emergency rescue and egress. If you have curtains on your windows, or curtains on cabinetry, they must be constructed of a fire-retardant material or treated with a fire-resistant process. Section 806.2

11 Safety Rule #10 Household quality furnishings are not approved for use within the educational premises and must be removed from all classrooms. All compliant items must meet specific standards mandated by the NC Fire Code. Section 805.3.3.1

12 Safety Rule #11 – Fire doors and smoke barrier doors shall not be blocked or obstructed or other wise made inoperable. Fire door assemblies shall not be modified. Section 703.2

13 Safety Rule #12 Hold open door devices and automatic door closures where provided, shall be maintained in proper working order. During the period that such device is out of service for repair, the door it operates shall remain in the closed position. Section 703.2.2

14 Safety Rule #13 Anyone should be able to open an exit door from the inside at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge. A device such as a panic bar that locks only from the outside is permitted on exit discharge doors. Section 1910.36(d)(1)

15 Safety Rule #14 The clearance between ignition sources, such as light fixtures, radiators, flame producing devices and combustible materials shall be maintained in an approved manner. This includes limiting the number of ignition hazards introduced into the environment. Section 305.1

16 Safety Rule #15 You must maintain a clearance of 36 inches around all electrical panels. Section 605.3 NO YES

17 Safety Rule #16 Doors into electrical control rooms, boiler rooms, and mechanical rooms, shall be marked with visible and legible signs, stating what the room is, i.e.: Electrical Room, Mechanical Room, or similar wording. These rooms must remain free and unobstructed and cannot be used for storage of any items. Section 605.3.1 & Section 315.2.3

18 Safety Rule #17 Multi-plug adapters are not allowed. Section 605.4

19 Safety Rule #18 Fire Extinguishers and pull stations shall not be obstructed or obscured from view. Section 906.6

20 Safety Rule #19 The exit door should be allowed to swing fully open, and cannot project more than seven inches into the exit path. Section 1020.2

21 Safety Rule #20 Educational facilities serving a capacity of 100 or more shall have an unobstructed corridor width of seventy-two inches. Section 1016.2 Exception #4

22 Safety Rule #21 Art work and teaching material shall be limited on the walls of corridors to not more than 20 percent of the wall area. (A wall area is designated as the space from one door to the next.) Section 803.3.2
