2 Rita's Pregnancy Rita is 33. She is 5 feet 5 inches tall and currently weighs 145 pounds This is 7 pounds above her pre-pregnancy weight. She enjoys routine exercise and has an active lifestyle. She is currently 4 months pregnant. Her diet has remained consistent from her pre-pregnancy intake, so the one-day diet listed here is her typical intake.

3 Rita's pre-pregnancy energy needs were approximately 2500 calories per day. Rita is concerned about her energy needs now that she is pregnant and has asked you if she is eating enough calories What would be the amount of recommended weight for Rita to gain during the pregnancy given her pre-pregnancy BMI? Rita's pre-pregnancy protein needs were ~55 g per day, is she meeting her needs now or does she need to change her protein intake? Is Rita's intake of caffeine within recommendations? What about Rita's intake of vitamin D, calcium and iron. Is she meeting her needs? Rita has heard many "old wives tales" and received much advice about pregnancy from friends and relatives. She wonders if any of it is true. Make a minimum of five dietary changes to Rita's diet. Then identify the specific nutrient(s) that you are either trying to increase and/or decrease in her diet with the dietary modification. Why are these nutrients important for a healthy pregnancy? Is Rita at high risk for preeclampsia? If so, suggest changes to Rita's diet that could help lower her risk for developing it.
