5 UCAS Key Dates 24 th May 2016 UCAS online application system went live for 2017 applicants. 15 th October 2016 applications for Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine must be complete. 15 th January remaining applications must be complete.

6 The Application Process Key is research prior to application. Ampleforth Tutorial lessons will be used for this. Wednesday 15 th UCAS fair at Bradford University Open Days. Apply to up to 5 places. Key parts are educational details, personal statement and reference. University offers may be grades or tariff points CF and CI choices

8 Choosing: Top 5 Factors The Course: Over 30,000 courses. Many not available in schools. Content may vary massively for same course title. Is it appropriate for career aspirations? Do skill requirements fit current A level? Are entry requirements realistic? Research is paramount.

9 Choosing: Top 5 Factors Overall Academic Reputation: League Tables: Complete University Guide Times Guardian Rankings vary per subject. Check assessment for research or teaching.

10 Choosing: Top 5 Factors Graduate Employment Rates Ultimately a stepping stone to work. Tables only show employment within 6 months. Investigate types of employment as well.

11 Choosing: Top 5 Factors The Quality of Academic Facilities Can be checked on open days. Check student satisfaction scores. Libraries. Laboratories. IT suites/access

23 Student Finance: Tuition Fees Tuition Fees – Up to £9000 Government white paper sets out plan to let universities charge more. All students can access a loan to cover this. This loan is not means tested.

24 Student Finance: Maintenance Loan Access to the maintenance loan is affected by family income. Figures based on living away from home outside London. Family IncomeAmount of loan £20,000£8,200 £30,000£7,612 £40,000£6,434 £50,000£5,256 £60,000£4,078 £70,000£3,821 £80,000£3,821

25 Repayment Pay nothing until earning over £21,000 p.a. Pay 9% of earnings above £21,000. This start point is frozen for 5 years. Deducted like income tax. Anything left unpaid after 30 years is written off.

26 When to apply Application must be complete by end of May of the year you are going to university. Will need tax details (P60) from the previous financial year. You must reapply each subsequent year.

27 Bursaries Issued by universities. Must apply to the university. Criteria for qualification very varied. Research necessary. Access Schemes Reduced entrance exams. Induction sessions
