Power supply Conduction, Insulation and Protection Control Transformation of Energy Other Functions

Power Supply Electrical function of a component Component provides current in a circuit Examples: Battery Electrical outlet Solar cell Alternator Thermocouple Piezoelectric (electricity resulting from pressure)

Conduction Electrical function Transmits current from one part of the circuit to another Examples: Wires Metals Human body Printed circuit (electronic devices)

Insulation Electrical function Component that prevents current flow Examples: Plastics Ceramics

Protection Electrical function Component that stops flow of current during a power surge Examples: Fuses Breakers

Resistance Electrical function Decreases electron flow in a circuit Examples: Resistors (for coding see p. 468 Figure 14.14)coding

Control Unipolar = single-pole = 1 switch Bipolar = double-pole = 2 switches Unidirectional = single-throw = electrons can only go 1 way Bidirectional = double-throw = electrons can go 2 ways

Transformation of Energy Electrical function Component converts electricity into another form of energy Examples: Light (bulb) Heat (element) Vibration (piezoelectric crystal) Magnetism (electromagnets)

Other Electrical Functions Condenser/capacitor  stores electrical charge Camera flash Diode  ensures current flow in 1 direction Circuit doesn’t work when battery upside down Transistor  blocks or amplifies current Microprocessors Relay  controls a high voltage circuit from a distance with a low voltage circuit X-ray machines
