Habitat Lives in Rocky mountains Hilly, no-till grain fields under 20 acres flanked by small woodlots

Appearance The male has a white throat and bands across each side of the head Measures up to 28cm(11in) in length. Reddish brown above and white, barred with black, on the belly.

Diet In spring they eat green plants, and during nesting and brood- rearing times insects and other invertebrates are major food items In winter, acorns and pine seeds are important.

Fun facts The name quail designates birds belonging to two divisions of the pheasant family
