A program of study that involves a multi-year sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to high-demand, high- opportunity, postsecondary education and careers. Who can participate in a career pathway? Any student can participate in a career pathway at AHS by talking with your school counselor and signing up for courses and required activities. Make sure to sign up for the courses in the correct pathway sequence. See course matrix for details. What are the Career Pathways available at AHS? There are 4 emerging career pathways at AHS: Health Science and Medical Technology (Beginning 2015-2016) Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (Beginning 2015-2016) Digital Media Arts (Beginning 2015-2016) Information and Communication Technologies (Beginning 2016-2017)

4 How do I complete a career pathway at AHS?  3 designated pathway courses in the proper sequence (enrollment is open 9th-12th grade)  2 complementary courses identified in pathway matrix  Career Pathway Portfolio/Exit Interview  Application for Pathway Recognition  College Visits and Career Investigation  Guest Speaker Series  Job Shadows  Internships and Job Experience Students will also be encouraged to participate in the following Work-Based Learning opportunities:

6 Health Science & Medical Technologies Career Pathway What Are The Designated Courses? Principles of Biomedical Science While investigating a fictional person, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. Human Body Systems Students build organs and tissue, use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases. Medical Interventions Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail.

8 Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Career Pathway What Are The Designated Courses? Computer–Assisted Design and Drafting (CAD) Students learn a variety of 2D and 3D drafting and computer imaging skills with Photoshop & Illustrator. Learners quickly create computer models of products, cars, and architecture. This class explores the most advanced industry software from Autodesk, Adobe, and Sony Vegas. Students will also create models for the 3D printer. Computer–Assisted Design and Drafting ROP Students learn advanced drafting skills and create 3D computer models for mechanical engineering, industrial design products, and architectural structures. This utilizes the most advanced industry software applications. Advanced Architectural Design ROP This continuation of CAD is a college level course articulated with Diablo Valley College’s Architecture program. While taking this ROP class, students enroll in DVC’s ENGIN-127 Introduction to Revit course. Upon completion, students earn 3.0 units of elective credit from DVC that can be transferred to UC or CSU.

10 Digital Media Arts Career Pathway What Are The Designated Courses? Art I or Photo I In either course, students will learn the art of image composition and visual perception. Students will have a chance for more creative freedom as they work with a variety of styles of art. Digital Media Arts I This course focuses on computer graphics, illustration and design using the Adobe Creative suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and InDesign). Students will create custom images in Photoshop, logos and illustrations with Illustrator, animations in Flash, and graphic layout design using InDesign. The course has a strong emphasis on art and graphic design. Digital Media Arts II Upon successful completion of Digital Media Arts 1, students will be eligible to take Digital Media Arts 2 (available 2016/2017) which focuses on actual design projects from the community. to fail.
