WHAT IS A NETWORK? When two or more computers or devices are linked together. Any device connected to a network is a node.

TYPES OF NETWORKS LAN (Local Area Network) WAN (Wide Area Network) MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) CAN (Campus Area Network) PAN (Personal Area Network)

LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK) A group of nodes linked together in a small geographical location such as a building or group of buildings.

WAN (WIDE AREA NETWORK) A collection of LANs that is used to send data across long distances. Sometimes thousands of miles.

MAN (METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK) Typically owned by a local Government. Designed for a city or a town, a MAN is larger than a LAN and smaller than a WAN.

CAN (CAMPUS AREA NETWORK) A series of LANs in college campus buildings.

PAN (PERSONAL AREA NETWORK) A mini LAN for someone's personal devices.

SENDING AND RECEIVING DATA Bandwidth The theoretical maximum data transferable at any given time. Throughput The actual amount of data being transferred.
