Six Kingdoms of Life Environmental Science
2
Six Kingdoms Archaebacteria Archaebacteria Eubacteria Eubacteria Protists Protists Fungi Fungi Plants Plants Animals Animals
3
Archaebacteria Oldest form of life Oldest form of life Singe cell organism (unicellular) Singe cell organism (unicellular) Found in extreme environments Found in extreme environments –Geysers –Hotsprings –Volcanic ocean vents
5
Eubacteria Second oldest form of life Second oldest form of life Single cell organism (unicellular) Single cell organism (unicellular) Most familiar bacteria Most familiar bacteria –Streptococcus –Lactobacillus –Staphylococcus
7
Protists “Misfits” kingdom “Misfits” kingdom All microscopic organisms that are not plants, not animal, not bacteria, and not fungi. All microscopic organisms that are not plants, not animal, not bacteria, and not fungi. Single cell organism (unicellular) Single cell organism (unicellular) Protozoa, Amoeba Protozoa, Amoeba
9
Fungi Most are multi-cellular organism Most are multi-cellular organism Mold, mildew, mushrooms Mold, mildew, mushrooms Some are very important to ecosystems or as food. Some are very important to ecosystems or as food. Some cause diseases – ringworm, and athlete’s foot Some cause diseases – ringworm, and athlete’s foot
11
Plants Second largest kingdom Second largest kingdom Multi-cellular organisms Multi-cellular organisms Producers (make their own food) Producers (make their own food) Without plants life as we know it would not exist. Without plants life as we know it would not exist.
13
Animals Largest kingdom Largest kingdom Multi-cellular Multi-cellular Consumers – must eat for energy Consumers – must eat for energy Over 1 million known species Over 1 million known species

Activity: Foldable Divide a sheet of notebook paper into 6 equal sections wide ruled: 4-5 lines each college ruled: 5-6 lines each Split each section into two parts and label the sections “characteristics” and “examples” The characteristics section will be larger
16
Activity: Foldable Use another sheet of paper to cut out a “cover flap” for each section Staple each flap to cover up the information sections underneath Label one flap for each kingdom of life
17
Activity: Foldable Now that your foldable is created, use your notes and/or textbook to fill out all the information in each section This will be your study tool to help you remember the six kingdoms of life
