@UCLpress Background Imprint was owned by commercial publisher in late 1990s/2000s Repatriated to UCL 2013 Launched as UK’s first fully open access university press June 2015 UCL – strong OA ethos and support (APCs) Publish scholarly monographs, textbooks, edited volumes, journals Published 14 books and 3 journals in first year Achieved over 35,000 downloads in over 160 countries
3
@UCLpress UCL Press mission Why was UCL Press set up? Strong OA ethos at UCL in publishing policies and support for OA (APC fund) Desire to have a university press – recognition of benefits for the institution Desire to challenge the prevailing scholarly publishing model Current research doesn’t reach the full potential audience, especially for AHSS monographs Offer UCL academics a genuine OA publishing alternative Taking publishing back into the university system Benefits to the institution if its research is read far and wide
4
@UCLpress New university presses With the exception of Goldsmiths Press, all of the above are open access and based within libraries, with a similar mission Goldsmiths plans to be run on a commercial model and to publish innovative, non-traditional outputs that reflect Goldsmiths disciplines Common challenges: Funding, investment Competition with existing publishers for authors Infrastructure, resource, skills Picture: Cardiff University Press Picture: White Rose University Press Picture: Goldsmith University Press Picture: University of Westminster Press

@UCLpress Library publishing – a global perspective Nearly 70 members, mainly US 115 libraries in US listed in the 3 rd Library Publishing Directory Serves the library publishing community by providing advocacy, training, best practice, annual conference, shared knowledge The University of Michigan Press is a vital component of UM Library's Michigan Publishing, which is the primary academic publishing division of the University. We champion the Library’s research and scholarly communications missions through our global digital and print publishing and distribution programs. A recognition of the need to create an effective mechanism for disseminating high quality ANU scholarship that lacks a ready commercial market A determination to eliminate barriers inherent in existing models of scholarly communication An acceptance that the operational overheads of the conventional academic press are no longer affordable A realisation that emergent electronic press technologies offer a feasible alternative to the conventional academic press in terms of cost and available infrastructure Library Publishing Coalition University of Michigan Press Australian National University Press

7
@UCLpress The values of university presses Make available to the public the full range and value of research generated by university faculty University Presses sponsor work in specialized and emerging areas of scholarship that do not have the broad levels of readership needed to attract commercial publishers Add value to scholarly work through rigorous editorial development; professional copyediting and design; and worldwide dissemination Commit resources to long-term scholarly editions and multi-volume research projects Generate favorable publicity for their parent institutions through news coverage and book reviews, awards, and exhibits at scholarly conferences University Presses extend the reach and influence of their parent institutions, making evident their commitment to knowledge and ideas
8
@UCLpress Advantages for the institution Via Open Access, the university’s research reaches a large global audience Reach, impact, prestige derived from publication of its own research Supporting research from inception to publication Showcasing own academics Benefits of OA – increase in readers Dissemination of research that wouldn’t otherwise be published commercially but still has an audience Worldwide reach, to countries where print books wouldn’t otherwise reach or would be unaffordable Raising author profile, and therefore institution profile – invitations to speak, write articles, attend conferences Via Open Access, the university’s research reaches a large global audience Reach, impact, prestige derived from publication of its own research Supporting research from inception to publication Showcasing own academics Benefits of OA – increase in readers Dissemination of research that wouldn’t otherwise be published commercially but still has an audience Worldwide reach, to countries where print books wouldn’t otherwise reach or would be unaffordable Raising author profile, and therefore institution profile – invitations to speak, write articles, attend conferences Recruiting students Contribute to REF Impact Publishing expertise at the institution – attend careers forums, lectures to MA students, workshops for ECRs Support university-specific publishing eg museums, collections, anniversary events, institutional histories Relationship with authors as colleagues Advice, OA advocacy Contributing to student experience Publication taken back into the university system and thereby making savings for libraries Recruiting students Contribute to REF Impact Publishing expertise at the institution – attend careers forums, lectures to MA students, workshops for ECRs Support university-specific publishing eg museums, collections, anniversary events, institutional histories Relationship with authors as colleagues Advice, OA advocacy Contributing to student experience Publication taken back into the university system and thereby making savings for libraries
