09.1 WELCOME TO COMMON CORE HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL YEAR 2015-2016 SESSION 9 20 JANUARY 2016 ANGLES WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH

09.2 TODAY’S AGENDA  It’s TIME: Reflecting on homework & the role of content knowledge  Eureka Math G10 M5L4: Experiments with Inscribed Angles  Break  Modeling mentoring conversations  Big ideas discussion  Discussing curriculum evaluation tools  Homework and closing remarks

09.3 ACTIVITY 1 IT’S TIME REFLECTING ON HOMEWORK AND THE ROLE OF CONTENT KNOWLEDGE

09.4 ACTIVITY 1 IT’S TIME: THEMES AND IMPERATIVES Overarching Themes  Social Justice  Systemic Thoughts and Actions  Leadership Imperatives  …for Knowledge  …for Instruction and Assessment  …for Systemic Change Supportive Conditions  Shifts in Beliefs and Mindsets  Vision  Designated Leaders

09.5 ACTIVITY 1 IT’S TIME: THEMES AND IMPERATIVES Reflecting on your geometry content learning Discuss with your small group:  In what areas have you learned something new?  In what areas have you increased or refined your own mathematical knowledge?  In what areas have you learned something about student thinking and learning?

09.6 ACTIVITY 1 IT’S TIME: THEMES AND IMPERATIVES Imperatives for Knowledge  Mathematics Content Knowledge  Pedagogical Content Knowledge  Mathematics Curriculum Knowledge How to do the math (knowledge that any math user would need) How to teach the math and how students will think about the math (misconceptions, prior knowledge, etc.) Flexible knowledge of math to support student learning (knowledge only teachers really need) How to sequence learning over time in effective ways that support long-term student learning

09.7

09.8

09.9 ACTIVITY 1 IT’S TIME: THEMES AND IMPERATIVES Focus on Content Knowledge  Create a concept map with everything you know about circles  Think about capturing aspects of common and specialized content knowledge on your map  We will revisit this concept map at the end of this semester’s lessons

09.10 ACTIVITY 2 EXPERIMENTS WITH INSCRIBED ANGLES EUREKA MATH TM GRADE 10 MODULE 5 LESSON 4 As you engage, consider: what aspects of Big Ideas 1 and 2 do you notice in the lesson? Record tangible examples of each to share at the lesson’s conclusion.

Break

09.12 ACTIVITY 3 MODELING MENTORING CONVERSATIONS

09.13 ACTIVITY 2 MODELING MENTORING CONVERSATIONS  Five phases of an instructional conference:  Launching  Reflecting  Reinforcing  Refining  Reflecting  Some things to consider as you plan your conference:  Select one person to conduct the conference tonight  As the teacher talks, press for evidence about what did or did not go well  Use the Do’s and Don’ts document as a guide for moving towards more interactive conversations

09.14 ACTIVITY 2 MODELING MENTORING CONVERSATIONS  As we come back together, consider:  What relational skills do you notice being used in the two conferences?  If you were to be observed by the person conducting the conference in two weeks, what would you expect them to be looking for in your practice?

09.15 ACTIVITY 4 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION FROM NCTM ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS FOR GEOMETRY GRADES 9-12

09.16 ACTIVITY 4 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION  Reflect on your own about how the focus on Big Ideas 1 and 2 allowed you to make connections between this lesson and other Geometry concepts.  Add some notes to the Big Ideas packet from last time regarding tonight’s lesson.

09.17 ACTIVITY 4 “BIG IDEAS” DISCUSSION  Big Idea 1. Working with diagrams is central to geometric thinking.  Big Idea 2. Geometry is about working with variance and invariance, despite appearing to be about theorems.

09.18 ACTIVITY 5 IT’S TIME RETURNING TO OUR CURRICULUM EVALUATION TOOLS

09.19 ACTIVITY 5 CURRICULUM EVALUATION TOOLS What resources are your district looking for (current or future?)  What sorts of learning do you want these resources to support?  How will you evaluate the resources before and after adoption?

09.20 ACTIVITY 5 CURRICULUM EVALUATION TOOLS  Using the EQuIP tool provided, evaluate one of the two lessons provided to you  Eureka Math, Grade 10, Module 3, Lesson 8  Holt textbook excerpts

09.21  Read It’s TIME Chapter 3: Imperatives for Knowledge (pp. 19-26)  Reflect on the following questions:  In what areas of knowledge have you grown during the CCHSML project?  How do the categories of knowledge help you think about your own future professional development and how to support the learning of your colleagues? ACTIVITY 6 HOMEWORK AND CLOSING REMARKS
