STUDYING (IT’S NOT AS SCARY AS IT SOUNDS I PROMISE)
11
WHAT DOES “STUDY” MEAN? Studying on a basic level is when you look back over things you have learnt in class repeatedly to make sure you understand and remember the information for things like exams and assignments.
12
HOW TO STUDY There are so many different ways to “study” Everyone’s techniques will be different Try different ways to find which ones work for you No way is “the right way” but you do need a way
13
TYPES OF LEARNERS 1.Visual Learners 1.Auditory Learners 1.Kinesthetic Learners 2.Reading/writing Learners http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self- assessments/learning-styles.shtml
14
VISUAL (SEEING) LEARNERS WHAT? Prefer to see info and to visualize the relationships between ideas. TACTICS: Works well with charts and pictures. Presentations must be highly visual and show relationships between various points. EXAMPLES: - Mind maps - Diagrams - Color-coding (highlighters) - Pictures - Models
15
AUDITORY (LISTENING) LEARNERS WHAT? Prefer to hear info rather than reading it or seeing it displayed visually. TACTICS: Should: recite info out loud repeat points to themselves ask questions and engage in discussion EXAMPLES: - Study groups - Recording of your notes - Watch videos - Participate in class discussions
16
KINESTHETIC (MOVING) LEARNERS WHAT? Hands-on, experimental learners; they learn best by doing TACTICS: Doing activities that get you up and moving to demonstrate or experience certain points. Can also write things down. EXAMPLES: - Role playing - Writing notes - Experiments (science) - Study with others
17
READING/WRITING learners WHAT? Learn best when reading and writing; interacting with text is more powerful for them than hearing or seeing images TACTICS: These learners will learn best from being given written practice exams that give them a chance to write down what they have learned EXAMPLES: - Reading over booklets and notes - Rewriting notes and various information
18
ORGANISATION Make sure when you are in class, write down important points When taking notes make sure they are well organized Write down assessment and exam dates in your diary/calendar If you miss a class, follow it up - copy any work you missed from a friend in your book and ask your teacher what you missed (ie. homework, important information, assessment notifications etc.)
19
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS Your teachers are happy to answer questions! It’s what they are here for! For example: If you go home one night to do your maths homework and get stuck on question 3, come back into school the next day and ask the teacher to go over it with you.
20
WHERE TO STUDY? At home (either in your room or in a different room) At the public library School library (homework club) When? Basically anywhere you can concentrate comfortably and effectively. I would highly recommend a desk being involved though!
21
STUDY CHECKLIST At a desk Sitting on a comfortable chair Distractions out of reach (devices, TV etc) Water bottle (very important) Music (optional) Good lighting Pencil case (pencils, pens, highlighters, calculator etc.) Books Any other materials you will need depending on what technique you use and subject you are studying Device of your choice
22
OKAY, TIME FOR THE MOOSHY STUFF… School will be stressful at times, no matter how much you study, exams and assessments can still clash with other commitments, you may still forget the answers. Although, you must try you’re hardest to have the right attitude, always do your best and stay true to yourself.
23
