Context The Spanish Civil War: An overview

Starter What can you learn from this photo about the Spanish Republican militia in the first days of the war? The banner [roughly] translates as The Tom Mann English Anti- Fascist Company Proletarian Discipline will beat Fascism.

The Army expected the Rebellion to win in weeks But the workers held on to key cities.

In some areas law and order broke down and some people looked for revenge. Trade Unions and Political Parties prepared for the Nationalist onslaught

In the Nationalist zone an organised campaign of killing of rivals began.

Franco ’ s army was flown to Spain. It marched north, scattering the militia.

But in Madrid the Nationalists were stopped by the militias, helped by International Volunteers in late 1936.

The Nationalists tried several more times to surround Madrid but were stopped at Jarama and Guadalajara in February and March 1937.

The Nationalists decided to conquer the north. Bombing Guernica and capturing the land.

The Republicans tried to take the pressure off attacking north of Madrid at Brunete in July 1937. Early success gave way to stalemate.

In the Winter of 1937/8 the Republicans began an offensive around Teurel. Again, early success and long term failure.

The Republicans retreated through Aragon to the River Ebro.

One last attempt was made to hold back the Nationalists. While the Nationalists were held north of Valencia The Republicans attacked across the Ebro.

The attack eventually ended in retreat. The exhausted Republic collapsed between October 1938 and April 1939.
