18. 1.... Well, I saw him coming and thought: “He can’t be looking for me.” But, I was wrong. It took me about twenty minutes to find my way back out of the house. People who live in these big houses must have good memories to find their way around. Anyway, as I was saying, I found my way out and got all the things into the van. Then, suddenly, I heard this loud voice, like somebody speaking through a microphone. It was the police. They told me I was surrounded. Can you imagine? Somebody had seen me from the road and had called the police and then had tried to follow me to make sure I didn’t escape. That’s how I ended up here. How about you?

19. 2.... I can’t believe what happened. I was walking along the road when all of a sudden I disappeared down a hole. I was really frightened. Then I looked up and I could see this man above me. He told me to wait a minute and the next thing I knew, he had fallen into the hole, too. Well, it was a big shock for me. But the man was really kind. He told me to stay calm. He managed to climb back up and then dropped down a rope so that I could climb out, too.

20. 3. During a recent survey, about 95% of people who were asked the question: “What do you think is the biggest crime in your city?” replied “car theft.” However, this does not match the latest results provided by the Moore Institute of Crime Statistics. The Institute says that they have been researching all crime reports in 10 large cities for the last two years. Interestingly enough, car theft was not at the top of their list, although more cars are being stolen every year. Also on the increase were reports of people being arrested for identity theft, but by far the biggest problem is assault with the motive of robbery.

21. In most cases, women, usually elderly women, are followed, even in daylight, and when it seems the moment is right, the thief quickly takes her purse and runs. Of course, there are also teams who work together, using motorcycles to help the thieves escape quickly. Police are looking at this information and are trying to find a solution to this problem.

23. 5.... and the latest news about what happened in Mr. Eats, the health food store, early this morning. It appears that somebody entered the store with a dog. When the customer was asked to leave the dog outside, he started to argue. The manager of the store was very calm and polite and then suddenly it seems that the man grabbed three store clerks. When he threatened them, another customer, a young woman of about 30, took $1,000 out of her bag and told the man to take the money and leave the clerks alone. But he wasn’t interested. He pushed the clerks to the ground and started yelling. He got very angry and very red in the face and then collapsed. Police say that he has been taken to the hospital with a suspected heart attack.

24. 6. Cashier Next, please. Woman Yes, good morning. I’d like to withdraw some money and check my balance. Robber Don’t move, either of you! Now, just stay nice and cool and hand me all the money you have there... Cashier You won’t get away with this, you know. We’ve got cameras... Robber Shut up! And just act as if nothing is happening. Woman You are so rude! How dare you talk to us like that! And you can wait your turn.

25. Robber Lady, don’t argue with me. Give me the money. Woman I told you. I am not letting a rude young man like you cut in the line. You can wait, as I said before, just like everybody else. Robber And I told you, lady, don't argue with me! Stop shouting and give me your purse. And you, stop staring at me and give me all the money you’ve got. Woman Now, look here. That’s enough. The only way you will get my purse is if I hit you over the head with it, and I don’t like the way you are talking to the cashier. Now, I want to be served and you can just wait. Robber I’m getting out of here...

26. 7.... It’s very easy. When you get off the bus at Long Street, you turn left,... uh, sorry, that’s right,... yes, right, and then go straight ahead until you get to the intersection where Washington Bank is. Then, you go right again and on your left you will see the old bridge crossing the river. Go past the bridge, and then turn right. It’s not at all difficult. The courthouse is the big building on the left.

27. 8.... In fact, neither of them can be blamed, really. The woman in the car was coming to the intersection at quite a slow speed. She appeared to be driving carefully. Just on the corner, I saw the driver of the van signaling and then moving toward the intersection, too. It was my first day in this area and I wasn’t really sure how the lights worked. In fact, there had been a power outage in the morning and so they weren’t working the way they should have. Anyway, it’s my fault, because I got confused and then signaled to the car and the van to move at the same time. Then, the next thing I knew, they had crashed. Fortunately, nobody was traveling fast. I’m really sorry about this and I feel quite embarrassed.
