2. Childhood Born in 1805 Kingston, Jamaica Her mum was a slave growing vegetables Mary often watched her mother look after sick British officers From that she learnt how to treat illnesses She had a brother and a sister Her father was a Scottish officer

3. Her travels When she was 12 she went to England She stayed with some relatives In England she was called names because she was black In November 1825 she went back to Jamaica Her ship caught fire Paid the cook 2 pounds if he would tie her to his hen – coop so she would float Happily the fire was put out In February 1826 she arrived back in Kingston

4. Later life When she came back she learnt about herbs Met an English officer who was staying at the inn They fell in love and married His name was Horatio Edwin Sadly soon after he became very ill Mary nursed him but he died Soon after her mother died

5. Her Career Mary became well- known as a doctress When army doctors stayed in the inn she learned from them

Helping the sick In 1850 She went to Panama While she was there a man died of cholera No one believed her that that was the cause of death Soon many people became ill of the same disease There was no doctor so they went to Mary for help One night a baby died from cholera Mary wanted to learn about cholera so cut open the body

7. Crimean War In 1854 Britain and France went to war against the Russians in a place called Crimea Mary wanted to go as a nurse She went to London to offer to go to Crimea Every where she went she was turned away She tried to join Florence Nightingale’s nurses but they had enough Mary went back to where she lived in tears

8. To the battlefields Mary decided that no ones going to stop her from doing what she wanted She paid her own fare to Crimea She sent postcards to the injured saying she would come and set up a British hotel there (on the battlefields) On the 25 th 1855 Mary set off to Crimea There Florence Nightingale was in charge of the army hospital At the hospital as much as she could Some of the officers that were there she had known in Jamaica

9. Life in Crimea When Mary sailed to Balaclava Mary got straight to work treating the sick While she was there Mary sold some of her food that she had brought After six weeks she decided to build a shop It was not easy to find the different materials and builders But in the end it was built It was Mary’s home as well as a shop Miss Seacole’s hut, became well know and was even marked on some of the war maps

10. The British Hotel In 1855 Mary built the British Hotel just as she had said The main building was a long room with mostly counters and shelves Nearby were huts were Mary and the workers slept Mary had problems such as rats nibbling into sacks of food and they even attacked live sheep!!!! Thieves stole 40 goats, 7 sheep and dozens of geese and turkeys Mary knew the thieves were the people with baggy trousers (the French soldiers) In June 1855 Mary heard that the British soldiers were going to attack Sebastopol So she stayed up all night making sandwiches

11. Mary Retires On 11 th of September Sebastopol was taken from the Russians, but war wasn’t over Mary worked hard preparing the hotel for Christmas visitors In 1856 the war ended and Mary’s Shop and hotel was no longer needed so packed as much as she could for the journey back to England She had no money left Mary was famous when she arrived in England She was then invited to a dinner with the army When Mary came back to England she wanted to go to India to work as a nurse But she couldn’t raise enough money so she retired

12. Mary Seacole’s Death Mary Seacole died in May 14 th 1881 in London. Her dad was a great loss to the country. This is Mary’s grave!
