New SAT Math Test Jason Henderson Triad CUSD #2 Jason.Henderson@tcusd2.org

SAT Math Test Specifications SAT Specs

Differences between Old SAT Math and New SAT Math 1.No penalty for guessing 2.Much more focus on algebra and less on geometry 3.More focus on data analysis and statistics 4.Many more “word problem” 5.Scale for overall SAT is back at 1600 rather than 2400. a.Top overall math score is 800

Four areas of focus for the new SAT Math Test 58 Total Questions 1.Heart of Algebra (33%/19 questions) 2.Problem Solving and Data Analysis (29%/17 questions) 3.Passport to Advanced Math (28%/16 questions) 4.Additional Topics in Math (10%/6 questions)

Heart of Algebra (33%/19 questions) Focuses on linear equations and systems of linear equations ○Students will create equations that represent situations ○Students will solve equations and systems of equations ○Students will make connections between different representations of linear relationships The problems require more “thinking” than ACT problems. Very often the students might

Heart of Algebra Example

Problem Solving and Data Analysis (29%/17 questions) Focuses on making sure students are “quantitatively literate and demonstrate a command of math that resonates through college courses and everyday life” ○Students must describe relationships shown graphically ○Students must analyze statistical data ○Covers real world situations in science and social science ○Problems are heavy in ratios, percentages, and proportional reasoning

Problem Solving and Data Analysis Example

Passport to Advanced Math (28%/16 questions) Focuses on math students will need in a wide variety of careers and college work ○Students must be familiar with more-complex equations or functions ○Students must identify and create equivalent expressions ○Students must create, analyze, and fluently solve quadratic equations ○Student must create and graph exponential, quadratic, and other non- linear functions

Passport to Advanced Math Example

Additional Topics in Math (10%/6 questions) ●Basically everything else that could be on the math test ●Geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, arithmetic of complex numbers ●Students must solve problems related to area and volume ●Students must apply definitions and theorems related to lines, angles, triangles and circles ●Students must work with right triangles, the unit circle, and trig functions

Additional Topics in Math Example

Breakdown of the SAT Math Test The SAT Math has two sections: A 25 minute Non-Calculator section with 20 questions A 55 minute Calculator-allowed section with 38 questions. Each section contains multiple choice and student produced responses. Multiple choice is roughly 75% of the test. Student Response is roughly 25% of the test

Non-Calculator Section Breakdown: The non-calculator section comes first and is 20 questions and is 25 minutes long. Here is the breakdown of the non-calculator section. Question TypeNumber of Questions % of Test Multiple Choice1575% Student-Produced525%

Reference Sheet Students Will Have

Student Produced Responses 13 out of the 58 questions are Student Produced Responses instead of multiple choice. What does that mean? Students will have to come up with the answers on their own Problems should work out with relatively good answers (no horrible fractions) In many cases the problems are actually slightly easier than the multiple choice (my opinion)
