Chemical process industry-1 Topic: manufacture of sodium bicarbonate. Prepared by: Akshay patel. Ajay patel. Vishal parmar. Shroff S.R. Rotary Institute of Chemical Technology

Chemical and physical property: Molecular Formula:NaHCO3 Molecular Weight:83.995 Colour- White, monoclinic prisms. Odour- odourless. Taste-saline & slightly alkaline taste. Boiling point: 851 0 C

Cont. Melting Point - 300 0 C Solubility-Insoluble in ethanol, soluble in water. Density-2.20g/cm3. Stability-Stable in dry air, but slowly decomposes in moist air

Toxicity and flammability property: Flammability: Sodium bicarbonate is non flammable. Toxicity: Toxicity to Animals: Acute oral toxicity (LD50): 3360 mg/kg [Mouse]. Toxic Effects on Humans: Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant).

Sodium bicarbonate:

Process flow sheet:

Process: Saturated solution of soda ash is passed from the top of a carbonating tower. Compressed CO 2 gas is admitted in counter currently from the bottom of the tower. The temperature of the tower is maintained at 40°C by the cooling coils, provided above the bottom of the tower. The suspension of bicarbonate formed is removed from the bottom of the tower, filtered and washed on a vacuum rotary drum filter. After centrifugation, the product is dried on continuous belt conveyor at 70°C to get 99.9% pure sodium bicarbonate.

Material Safety Data Sheet Chemical product: Product Name: Sodium bicarbonate Chemical Name: Sodium Bicarbonate Chemical Formula: NaHCO3 Hazards Identification: Potential Acute Health Effects: Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation.

First Aid Measures Eye Contact: Check for and remove any contact lenses. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Cold water may be used. Get medical attention if irritation occurs Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water. Cover the irritated skin with an emollient. Get medical attention if irritation develops. Cold water may be used. Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.

Fire and Explosion Data Products of Combustion: Not available. Special Remarks on Fire Hazards: When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. Handling and Storage Precautions: Do not ingest. Do not breathe dust. If ingested, seek medical advice immediately and show the container or the label. Keep away from incompatibles such as acids. Storage: Keep container tightly closed. Keep container in a cool, well-ventilated area.

Stability and Reactivity Data Stability: The product is stable. Conditions of Instability: Stable in dry air, but slowly decomposes in moist air. Incompatibility with various substances: Reactive with acids. Corrosivity: Non-corrosive in presence of glass. Special Remarks on Reactivity: Reacts with acids to form carbon dioxide. Dangerous reaction with monoammonium phosphate or a sodium-potassium alloy. Polymerization: Will not occur.
