Alexander The Great and His Empire Objective: Today I will view a PowerPoint Presentation to learn about Alexander the Great and his impact on Ancient Greece. As I view the show, I will reflect and answer questions on the worksheet provided

The Peloponnesian War After years of differing opinions, Athens and Sparta finally come to blows in a war lasting 27 years Apparently sending your kids to boot camp at age 7 works….Sparta wins the war While Athens and Sparta are busy playing who sank my battle ship….Macedonia led by King Philip II begin to conquer the rest of the world Tired from 3 decades of war Greece…divided..falls to well trained and UNITED Macedonia….oops!!!
3
What happens to Greece? King Philip took over Greece Even though the Greeks lost their independence, Philip allows them to keep their culture….good news for USA! Greece will never again be a great super power…awe that’s too bad… Philip makes a plan to attack Persia, but gets killed…guess what goes around, comes around His son…Alexander takes over

Alexander the who? To learn a little bit about the life of Alexander click on the link below and read a short bio about the guy behind the legend http://greece.mrdonn.org/alexander.html I am soooooo great! You can call me Alex the Great

Alexander finishes what his daddy started Alexander had grown up getting an education in Greece –He had studied under Aristotle…his father had wanted him to have the finest education so he was sent to Athens, sort of like going to Manual today C-R-I-M-S-O-N…crimsons, crimsons gotta win…go Manual Crimsons! He planned an attack on the Persians to unite the Greeks since they already held a grudge against the old Persians His battle tactics were terror and kindness –If enemies did not surrender their cities would be burned and their people tortured…that’s no fun!!! –If they surrendered they would be able to keep their own governments and he would actually give them some money for the stuff he destroyed when he attacked them…what a nice guy huh!!
6
Alex’s plan to rule the world Throughout history men have tried to take over the world….Alexander came as close to that dream as anyone possibly could His empire extended through Egypt, Asia and India…basically the world…Old Chris had not yet told us about America. Alexander had to come up with a way to control such a large territory –His plan was to use religion, Greek culture and local customs so that the whole world would join hands and love one another I hold the world in the palm of my hand
7
How do spread Greek culture? Let’s build Greek-style cities –Each city he built had an Agora, temples and theaters People from Greece, pumped at the many versions of their home towns, flocked to the new cities In the new cities people had to speak Greek Alexandria was one of the most famous cities built….wonder where he came up with such a unique name? –Located in Egypt; it had a college, a gym, a theater, a library and a temple dedicated to Poseidon

What was that about Religion? Alex used religion to inspire his followers and also unite those people he conquered He honored not only the Greek gods but also made sacrifices to the Egyptian and Persian gods…wonder how he kept them all straight? Alex also claimed himself as a god He eventually began to tell people he was the son of Zeus…”move over Hercules my babies daddy is Zeus…”
9
And everybody else's culture Alexander felt that the people he conquered would be more accepting if he practiced some of the things important to them He used the Persian system of government He began to dress like the Persians He began to greet visitors like the Persian…which happened to be in a tent…wonder if they roasted marshmallows and made smores too! Alex even encouraged marriage between the Macedonians and Persians…which may have something to do with a pretty little Persian he decided to marry Wow…that was hot!
10
Sounds like a great place...except While fighting in North India, Alex gets swamp fever and kicks the bucket He died at the age of 33 Cities began to collapse after his death His army began to fight each other for power His empire collapsed into three areas Even after swampy is gone, The Greek culture lived on… I don’t feel so good
