Theme of Hebrews By persevering faith, we can have partnership with God’s King-Priest Son!
2
Hebrews 6:9-20 Great reward brings great motivation!
3
Outline of Hebrews 6:9-20 I. Stay with it – 9-12 II. The example of Abraham – 13-18 III. Anchor of our soul – 19-20
4
Hebrews 6:4-5 – “Fallen away” In context, from what? The path to maturity!
5
Hebrews 6:6 This is a doctrinal and moral issue. What we believe has practical effects on our lives!
6
Summary of the Progression of Defection They chose to not believe, then… Their hearts hardened, then… They remained immature, then… They did not believe, then… Their lives reflected it, then… They ended up being judged.
7
Hebrews 6 Extreme sin forces an extreme response.
8
Hebrews 6:1-2 We can’t encounter an adult world with the character of an infant.
9
Hebrews 6:9-10 But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
10
Hebrews 6:9 First, the writer was convinced the readers were not going to fall away, produce “thorns and thistles”, and end up in judgment.
11
Hebrews 6:9 Next, the writer was confident in what came along with the pursuit of co-heirship with Christ or salvation.
12
“Salvation in Hebrews” = a Reward! 9:28 The first coming was to deal with sin The second coming: Has nothing to do with sin Is for believers Is for disciples anxious to see Him Is future (1:14; 2:5) Is called “salvation”
13
“Salvation in Hebrews” = a Reward! The author says he is writing to believers The dominant use of this term in the OT = the victory of the Messiah over His enemies The readers are Jewish believers (common use) The subject of the book is “the world to come”
14
“Salvation in Hebrews” = a Reward The salvation spoken of in 5:9 was first earned by Jesus through suffering What role was He “perfected” for? Jesus is now the “Author” (Captain, Forerunner) of that salvation This salvation is by works!
15
The King who offers us is also the High Priest who enables us!
16
Salvation To be delivered from our enemies a.k.a Victory!
17
“Things that accompany” salvation The special ministry of angels - Heb. 1:13 The High Priestly help of Jesus – Heb. 2:18; 4:16 Help from its Author or Captain – Heb. 5:8-9 The benefits of the new covenant – Heb. 8 The support of other Partners – Heb. 3; 10 God’s care – Heb. 6:10; Jn. 14:21, 23 The help of the Word – Heb. 4:12-13
18
Hebrews 6:10 Finally, God won’t forget the ministry they have done and will support them because of it.
19
Hebrews 6:10 God notices what we have done for others and responds to it.
20
Hebrews 6:11-12 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
21
Being Diligent: The Cure for Being “Sluggish” “Having or showing care and conscientiousness in one's work or duties.”
22
Hebrews 6:11 Just as in 4:11, God’s concern is that we remember to be diligent in our pursuit of partnership. Just what might that look like?
23
Diligence: How it might look… Planning exactly how and when I spend time in the Word and prayer Intentional time with growing believers Specifically praying about and addressing, issues I face, like anger or time-management Priority decisions in my life
24
Balance: Our part vs. God’s part We can count on the power of God, but we should never presume on it!
25
Hebrews 6:11 “Show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end” Finish what you’ve started!
26
Co-heirship: A reward for faithfulness to the end Romans 8:16-17 2 Tim. 2:11 Rev. 2:25-27
27
Co-heirship: A reward for faithfulness to the end Romans 8:16-17 2 Tim. 2:11 Rev. 2:25-27
28
Hebrews 6:12 “Sluggish” In 5:11, sluggish in hearing = slow to respond or make progress. Here the concern is that it will extend to their actions!
29
Hebrews 6:12 “Faith” and “patience” = two critical qualities. And, God has a plan to help our faith… coming soon!
30
Hebrews 6:12 “Inherit the promises” When we stay faithful, God makes it worth it.
31
Hebrews 6:13-15 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
32
Heb. 6:13-15 The example of Abraham Gen. 22 He faced a major trial “Salvation” of Israel related to the promise Lk. 1:68-75 The writer sees this fulfilled in the world to come We are now joined to the King and His destiny
33
Luke 1:68-70 “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David, As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began,
34
Luke 1:71-73 That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who hate us, To perform the mercy promised to our fathers And to remember His holy covenant, The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
35
Luke 1:74-75 To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
36
Hebrews 6:16-18 – He didn’t have to do it! For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
37
Heb. 6:16-18 Our faith gets a boost from God Our faith gets a boost from the most trustworthy Being in the universe.
38
Heb. 6:16-18 God guarantees it! 1.His word tells us 2.He swears an oath to confirm it!
39
Heb. 6:16-18 Our faith gets a boost from God A future sharing of the reign of Christ is an absolute guarantee from God! Whatever suffering we endure will be worth it!
40
Hebrews 6:19-20 – He didn’t have to do it! This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
41
Heb. 6:19-20 Our faith gets a boost from God “Hope” = “Confident expectation”
42
Heb. 6:19-20 Our faith gets a boost from God Sailors would leave their ship in a small boat to take the anchor ahead to be place where it is firmly placed.
43
Heb. 6:19-20 Our faith gets a boost from God There, in the presence of the Almighty God of the universe sits a man who continually intercedes for us, our Captain, our Forerunner. He made it successfully… …victoriously….
44
Heb. 6:19-20 Our faith gets a boost from God …and our King and High Priest invites the faithful to share in His rule. Our God tells us it’s true, it will happen, so it is and it will. But, He doesn’t stop there.
45
Heb. 6:19-20 Our faith gets a boost from God In matchless kindness the Almighty does what He doesn’t have to do… He swears with an oath!
46
Hebrews 6:1-2
