Sustainable Technologies for the Global Market Place - Turbomachinery/Reciprocating Products - Energy Solutions
3
The Project P08452: Fault Detection and Diagnosis –Sponsor: –Test Rig: Reciprocating Compressor Some similarities to an engine –Main Objective: Provide a Data Acquisition system that measures key parameters at the inlet/outlet and compiles them into an usable format to be kept in a database for future use.
4
Impact of Compressor Failure Example of a worst case scenario:
5
Its Gonna Blow! RUN! GO! Get to the Chopper!
6
Wouldn’t it be nice to have enough time to address the situation by having:
7
Importance of Identifying Compressor Faults Beforehand Not always as severe as the 1 st example but decreased performance causes: –Additional Downtime (Multiple Part Failures) –Lost Production –Extra Machine Cost for Repair/Replacement Result for Oil Refineries/Gas Producers –Loss of $Millions Per Day
8
How Does this Relate to You? Directly correlated to rising energy bills: –Increased Heating Bills –Higher Transportation Costs Includes Soaring Prices at the Gas Pumps
9
So where do you come in? Mechanical Engineer (3 total): –Thermodynamic, Fluids, Vibrations, Acoustics, and Control Systems issues relating to integration into Dresser-Rand products. –Generation of Failure Data by Inducing Faults Electrical and Computer Engineering (2 total): –PCB Layout, Analog and Digital Design, Noise Reduction Methods, and Data Acquisition Techniques – Hardware, Software, and Firmware of Data Acquisition Tools, Interface, and Database Design. Industrial Engineer (1 total): –Integration of systems and people, usability of the interface, team management, decision making, cost analysis, and design of experiments.
10
Why Data Acquisition? Collecting data can offer future insight by: –Measuring parameters that effect performance –Implementation of an Easy to Use Interface Clearly shows usable data from past/current operations –Failure responses through inducing faults Provides a challenging cross-functional experience in fields of ME, EE, IE, and CE. Hands-on real world application of knowledge learned in college.
