4 Epidemiologic data on Kenya.. #AIDS is the number 1 cause of adolescent deaths in Africa and in Kenya (9,720 in 2014) #51% of new adult HIV infections #HIV stigma and discrimination is the reason for low service uptake and death Adolescent deaths have since 2000. 5 Correct knowledge on HIV prevention is low Percent of women and men age 15-24 with comprehensive knowledge* of HIV *Comprehensive knowledge means knowing that the risk of getting HIV can be reduced by using condoms and limiting sex to one uninfected partner, knowing that a healthy looking person can have HIV, and rejecting the two most common local misconceptions about HIV prevention and transmission. Low levels of knowledge of HIV (58% - KDHS) Low testing rates (46% women; 58% men have never been tested) HIV Stigma is a main barrier for young people Low service coverage – HIV/SRH National AIDS Control Council, Kenya

6 Taking Action A multi pronged/multi-sector approach 1 st County to develop a fast-track plan targeting adolescents and young people – The plan has political support and was launched by H.E. the President of Kenya in Sept 2015 – The plan has clear targets for different sectors and agencies of Government, for which reporting to H.E. the president is done every 6 months 6 A multi-sector plan Catalyzing action in different sectors to achieve HIV prevention, care and treatment goals

8 Reducing new infections Education Sector Curriculum review Teacher Training Community Education Provision of SRH information and knowledge EBIs that work Health Sector All interventions as suitable Abstain messaging, Condoms, PrEP, PEP and SRH Services Communities Service delivery uptake Prevention messaging among peers

9 Increasing Treatment Coverage 130,000 additional children on Treatment The NASCOP initiated Accelerated Children’s Treatment Plan Geo-mapping to link schools & health facilities Peer education through the network of young learners living with HIV on Treatment Literacy 9

10 Eliminating Stigma A National anti-stigma campaign Revising Stigma Index to include young people Faith Sector engagements and investments Young people as advocates and champions

11 Accountability Reporting to H.E. the president is done every 6 months from each agency on the targets as set out National Steering Committee appointed by Cabinet Secretary convened by National AIDS Council H.E. the President is the Champion of the end-stigma campaign that is currently onl-going 11

12 One year on… Treatment targets are on Track Curriculum review is on-going County Education Directors have been oriented and required to track with reporting system Indicators as part of Education Sector report A massive national anti-stigma campaign in which private sector is involved/ invested Vibrant young persons living with HIV network Maisha County League running with ambitious targets

13 Being bold and ambitious The Maisha County League leverages the power of football to mobilize young people for a nationwide campaign to “Kick Out HIV Stigma.” This campaign strives to end HIV stigma and link young people to stigma-free HIV testing, treatment and ca
