2 Differences between fairy tales & folk tales Fairy tale: a story for children about fairies, or about magic and enchantment; a very improbable story; a lie Folk tale: a tale or legend originating and traditional among a people esp. one forming part of the oral tradition of the common people; usually considered to be false or based on superstition

3 Format of a fairy tale Introduction of characters Setting and mood Type of magic Conflict, dilemma, or problem to solve First attempt & failure to solve issue Second attempt & failure to solve issue Third attempt & failure to solve issue Happy or unhappy ending/resolution

9 Example: Fractured version of Cinderella Cinderella is ugly and has 3 beautiful stepsisters The prince can’t dance Cinderella likes to cook and clean She wears Uggs instead of glass slippers The fairy godmother’s wand is broken and changes her into a slug Cinderella didn’t want a carriage, she wanted a BMW The ball was a Saturday night at Club Abyss

10 Common elements of fractured fairy tales Irony- the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning; an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected Parody- a humorous or satirical imitation of a serious piece of literature or writing Satire- the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc
