Internet2 Fall Meeting ● Current State of Video Conferencing ● Why use this technology? ● Problems, and Solutions! ● Looking to the Future

Videoconferencing Today ● Hardware vs Software – H.323, Mobile, etc ● Open Source Applications – Ekiga (Linux, Windows) – Xmeeting (OSX) – AccessGrid (Linux, OSX, Windows) ● Current Developement – Google Voice, EVO, Bigbluebutton

Benefits of Open Source ● Hardware Independent – Utilizes hardware already in place – Minimal Upkeep – Community Based – Its Free! As in free speech ● Existing Applications that work ● Market Progressing to Open Source Platform

Is it Worth the Time? ● Technology will only improve ● Academia as a whole is the existing community ● What would be the product of this effort? – Communications paradigm shift ● Larger community means more developement ● Encourage global multidisciplinary collaboration ● If we don't who will?

Where to go from here ● Become Familiar with existing technology ● Use the solution that works for you ● Encourage use of these tools ● Grow the community – By using the software, you are the community – Use the hardware you have, with free software

Ekiga Version 3.2.7 Main Features in a nutshell ● Wide interoperability: (SIP and H.323) ● HD Sound (wideband) ● DVD QualityVideo (framerate, quality codec and frame size). ● SMS to cell phones ● Telephony features: Call Hold, Call Transfer, Call Forwarding, DTMF. ● LDAP technology ● GNU/Linux ● Audio and Video free calls through the internet ● Free Instant Messaging through the internet with Presence support ● Audio (and video) calls to landlines and cell phones with support to the cheapest service providers ● Free of choice of the service provid er

Xmeeting current version is 0.3.4 ● SIP and H.323 compliant client for OS X (>10.4) ● Gateways can bridge into the PSTN ● Open Source ● Quite Stable, Good Interoperability ● STUN ● H.224/H.281 Far End Camera Control ● Call Recording into QuickTime movies

Access Grid an ensemble of resources including multimedia large-format displays, presentation and interactive environments, and interfaces to Grid middleware and to visualization environments. These resources are used to support group-to-group interactions across the Grid. ● Many to Many collaboration ● Video and data sharing ● Invented by Argonne National Lab ● Over 500 nodes around the world ● Requires technical support

EVO The primary objective of EVO is to provide an improved system and a service to the LHC and other major High Energy Physics programs ● The EVO infrastructure automatically adapts to the prevailing network configuration and status ● The EVO Client (called Koala) is based on Java ● 384 kpbs for audio/video ● AccessGrid gateways ● Community use model

Big Blue Button Web Collaboraion (data & audio) ● BigBlueButton is an active open source project that focuses on usability, modularity, and clean design -- both for the user and the developer. The project is hosted at Google Code. ● Video! ● VOIP! ● Easy to deploy!

Now is the right time! ● When the economy is poor, working smarter with OSS can help. – Banks failing, gov't bail-outs, natural disasters ● Don't replace a fleet of hardware, refresh it with Linux installs! ● Don't pay through the nose for 50 licenses of propriatary software when OSS works! ● Business must gravitate toward these solutions, and begin giving back to their community ;-) – If you keep on doing what you've been doing, y'all keep on getting what you've got.
