6 Real time analysis...EGI Technical Forum Prague 20126 How we do it ● We belong to 99% of scientific researchers who haven't use grid infrastructure for research yet ● Our demands are not big, we need them occasionally ● We use commercial tools for signal analysis (MATLAB + toolboxes) and for modeling&simulation (3DS – Dymola) on MS Windows platform ● do not have resources to support cross platform development

8 Real time analysis...EGI Technical Forum Prague 20128 How we do it without cloud ● application installed locally on users PC – voice trainers, specialists in ORL – (distributed via CD or DVD, email …, on-site installation) ● Each user must be served personally, updates distributed same way ● Many different places in Czech republic and Slovakia

9 Real time analysis...EGI Technical Forum Prague 20129 How we do it with virtual infrastructure ● Install and maintain application on remote resource (virtual server) ● Customized RDP protocol to transfer sound recording without loss information ● Server accessible via CESNET2 network (application needs 1Mbps) ● Distribute connection information to users

11 Real time analysis...EGI Technical Forum Prague 201211 How we do it with cloud ● Virtual image in MetaCloud testbed provided by Metacentrum (CERIT-SC) ● Moved image from virtual infrastructure to cloud ● Deployment takes 1 week with help of support ● Instances can be cloned per needs ● We need our licenses for MS Windows platform ● Test application available as SaaS via Remote Desktop ● Virtual image in Amazon EC2 ● Licenses for MS Windows provided by vendor ● Deployment takes 2 hours without need of support involvement ● Instances can be cloned per needs, 1 micro instance free for 1 year ● available as Saas via Remote Desktop Connection

12 Real time analysis...EGI Technical Forum Prague 201212 Cloud in production from economical perspective ● Virtual image in MetaCloud testbed provided by Metacentrum (CERIT-SC) ● Costs – license for MS Windows platform – 1 standard license $880 - or ~$4800 per datacenter license, but we (users of cloud) cannot guarantee some license limitation ● Virtual image in Amazon EC2 ● Licenses for MS Windows provided by vendor - ● 1 reserved medium instance per 3 years + 1 on demand instances $1600
