Separable and inseparable prefix verbs (Präteritum) In the Präteritum, just like the Präsens, some prefixes are always attached to the verb, and others can be separated from it. When using a separable prefix verb in the Präteritum, move the prefix to the end of the sentence or clause. Jan verbrachte den Sommer in der Schweiz. Jan spent the summer in Switzerland. Einmal brachten wir unseren Hund zur Schule mit. Once we brought our dog to school. Der Lehrer erklärte die Aufgabe. The teacher explained the assignment. Jans Schwester rief ihn zu seinem Geburtstag an. Jan’s sister called him on his birthday.

Separable and inseparable prefix verbs (Präteritum) You learned in 2B.2 that verbs with prefixes can be either strong, weak, or mixed. The Präteritum of a verb with a prefix is the same as the Präteritum of its base verb, but with the prefix added to the front of the conjugated verb, if it is inseparable, or to the end of the clause, if it is separable.

I didn’t recognize my aunt in the old photo. Wir sahen als Kinder immer am Samstagmorgen fern. When we were kids, we always watched TV on Saturday mornings. Wer erfand das Internet? Who invented the Internet? Die Lehrerin schaute das Kind an. The teacher looked at the child.

Separable and inseparable prefix verbs (Präteritum) Remember that the prefix of a separable prefix verb is always stressed, while the prefix of an inseparable prefix verb is never stressed. Als wir am Freitag ausgingen, regnete es noch nicht. When we went out on Friday, it wasn’t raining yet. Wir bestellten zwei Pizzas zum Abendessen. We ordered two pizzas for dinner.

Separable and inseparable prefix verbs (Präteritum) In a negative sentence, put nicht before the separable prefix. Ute rief mich gestern nicht an. Ute didn’t call me yesterday. Die Kinder räumten ihre Sachen nicht auf. The kids didn’t pick up their things.

Separable and inseparable prefix verbs (Präteritum) When you talk about past events using a modal and a verb with a prefix, put the modal verb in the Präteritum. The prefixed verb goes at the end of the sentence in the infinitive form. Frau Müller musste den kaputten Regenschirm umtauschen. Mrs. Mu ̈ ller had to exchange the broken umbrella. Frank wollte sein altes Fahrrad verkaufen. Frank wanted to sell his old bicycle.
