2 Quiz answers Question 1: 2300 hours of Practice Placements This is the MINIMUM number of practice placement hours the NMC expects nursing students to undertake An accurate record of attendance must be maintained on student-held timesheet and in the practice placement’s off-duty or rota

3 Question 2: Due Regard Placement must be overseen by a “live” mentor with “due regard” Who can assess a student nurse in practice?: PP1: any registered professional PP2: only registered nurses (from any field of nursing) PP3: only registered nurses from same part of the register and field of practice as the student (due regard)

4 Question 3: Triennial Review and its links to revalidation 1.Mentored at least two students in last three years. 2.Participated in annual updating – to include an opportunity to meet and explore assessment and supervision issues with other mentors. 3.Explored as a group the validity and reliability of assessing practice in challenging circumstances. 4.Mapped own role development against the current NMC mentor/practice teacher standards. 5.Deemed to have met all requirements needed to be maintained on the local register.

5 Question 3: Triennial Review and Revalidation Triennial Review is on ongoing process Evidence should be collected throughout the year when supporting or assessing students Use the Triennial Review document on the mentor portal, www.anglia.ac.uk/mentors to guide your reflectionwww.anglia.ac.uk/mentors Present this evidence at your appraisal when your Triennial Review is due, along with revalidation evidence 5

6 Question 3: Triennial Review and Revalidation Evidence generated in meeting Triennial review requirements can be used to demonstrate your commitment to practice in revalidation by contributing to the revalidation sections: –continuing professional development, practice- related feedback, written reflective accounts/reflective discussion There are sections in the Triennial Review document that relate to the NMC code and NHS Constitution 6

7 Question 4: Sign-off mentors for Nursing Works with student for a minimum of one hour per week on the student’s final placement; Is familiar with student’s programme of study; Makes the final decision on whether a student meets the required standard to enter the NMC register; Will scrutinise evidence from student, colleagues and previous mentors (YOU!) to help inform their decision

8 Question 5: Concern that a student is struggling Identify the issue early in the placement and raise it with the student. Discuss with the student how the issue could be addressed. Consider contacting the link lecturer/education champion. Develop an action plan in collaboration with the student and provide support to help the student achieve the agreed outcomes by a set review date. Document in student’s practice assessment document. Review progress by set date. If objectives met document this in the assessment document. If not, inform the link lecturer or education champion and discuss further action planning and consequences for the outcome of the placement

9 Question 5: Cause for Concern Process The University should be informed as soon as there is evidence of a student concern or lack of progress A student should only be removed from practice if there are serious patient safety concerns. 9

10 Question 6: Named ‘Live’ Mentor for each placement Extract from SLAIP (2008) page 31 Mentors should be allocated prior to commencement of a placement. This should be sufficiently in advance of the placement to enable both the student and their mentor to prepare adequately for the placement. The NMC would recommend that, at a minimum, this should be one week prior to commencement of the placement.’ 10

15 Enhanced Practice Support Framework Lead Mentor MentorsCoaches New configuration for practice learning-Currently being rolled out in clinical areas across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Essex. All Registered staff in each area will be prepared for their role in this framework: Lead mentors: (one in each area) are role models for mentoring and are responsible for overseeing the quality of practice learning in their area. Mentors: will focus on managing student placement experience. Continue to retain responsibility and accountability for student assessment and meet NMC mentorship standards. Coaches: Every registered nurse required to act in a coaching role with students. Coaches will support students to develop and achieve a daily goal, which is aligned to one of their practice outcomes.
