Area of Bio Fuels and Bio Materials Situation in the Netherlands Dr ir Jan Willem Hofstee, Wageningen University

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Overview Courses in bio fuels, bio materials and quality of products Education and research infrastructure Research activities Current situation and market perspectives

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Courses in bio fuels, bio materials and quality of products Minor “Biobased technology” Sustainability Transitions: Concepts, Issues and Indicators Renewable Resources for the Bulkchemical Industry Renewable Energy: Sources, Technology and Applications Focus not only on technological aspects but also on societal aspects Discussion “Food or Fuel”

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Minor Biobased technology Learning outcomes describe technologies for production of renewable energy and other applications of renewable resources; discuss chain integration for large scale application of renewable resources; analyse and design renewable energy chains; illustrate the term “sustainability” and determine a personal opinion on sustainability; judge if a described petrochemical application can be replaced by biobased technology

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Other courses Environmental technology Courses (in)direct related to bio fuels and bio materials Food and Bioprocess process engineering Production of bio fuels, bio materials (medicine, high value food ingredients) Product Design and Quality Management Basic and advanced course on food quality management Horticultural Production Chains Product quality and post harvest physiology of horticultural and other plant products

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Education and research infrastructure Study programmes Wageningen University Environmental sciences Biotechnology Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering Research Chair groups Wageningen University Agrotechnology and Food Sciences Group (AFSG) (contract research) Business Unit Biobased products

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Research activities Business Unit Biobased Products www.biobasedproducts.wur.nl Four themes: fibres, bio fuels, chemicals and polymers producing ethanol and lactic acid from lignocelluloses feedstock Utilization of plant biomass for the production of acetone, butanol and ethanol by clostridial strains (the ABE fermentation) Bio hydrogen from biomass Development of a cost effective conversion of biomass into oil using solid state fermentation with fungi

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Research activities Chair Bioprocess Engineering www.bpe.wur.nl Focus on the design of bioreactors for the growth of algae Engineering aspects of growth of Monodus subterraneus in photo bioreactors Other relevant projects are Sustainable bio fuel: Bio-Alcohol production from Syngas (BIAS) The Green Solar Collector.

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Research activities Chair Valorisation of Plant Production Chains www.vpp.wur.nl Small scale production of ethanol using beet as the primary raw material Microbiological co-production of N-chemicals and ethanol from biomass fractions The valorisation of functionalized chemicals from biomass resources compared to the conventional chemical production route Lignin as the renewable resource for the future.

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Student participation Many projects are PhD projects PhD students MSc and BSc students can do their thesis work in the framework on one these projects Projects of AFSG In many cases students can do their thesis work (PhD, MSc and BSc) in the framework of these projects

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Current situation and market perspectives Short term : first generation bio fuels may replace fossil fuels Resources Rest streams and by products Primary resources – economically not feasible Import : end products, no raw resources Production Bio ethanol – recently started Pure Plant Oil – few facilities

ERABEE Meeting Dublin 13-14 October 2008 Current situation and market perspectives Medium long term : second generation bio fuels may replace fossil fuels Resources Cheap resources – organic waste, grass from road sides and nature reserves Energy crops – Miscanthus (import) Import : biomass as free trade product Production Fisher-Tropsch diesel No good chances for biodiesel from colza
