LUCIA Lucia is a day we celebrate every year at 13 th of december. It’s a way for us to open up for Christmas. On lucia we have something we call “lucia tåg” (lucia train ), with Lucia maids, “tomtar”, “stjärngossar and “pepparkaksgubbar” (gingermen). The one in center of the luciatåg is the Lucia, with candles in her hair. They sing traditional songs and wear candles. The word Lucia by the way comes from the latin word : lux, witch means “light”. Luciatrain is most common in daycare and school but also in many other places, and always on tv every year so you can watch if you don’t have the possibility to watch it live. In some families we “lussar” for each other by waking the ones whos sleeping, dressed up in Lucia outfits and sing songs and bring gingerbread and lussebums to bed, a nice way to wake up

MIDSUMMER Midsummer is for many here in Sweden one of the highlights of the summer. We celebrate the summersolstice – When the sun stand topmost on the sky, and we´ll have the longest day of the year, and the shortest night. We dance around a midsummerpole. I´ts a big pole who look like a cross with wreaths on both sides, and we dress it all in leaves and flowers. It´s very popular among the children. You eat and drink and get together to have fun and just enjoy this summerday as much as possible. Must-haves on midsummer is new-potatos, herring, and strawberrys! Some also follow the old tradition to pick 7 different kinds of flowers to put under your pillow, they say that if you do this you will dream about your true love

S OME MORE INTERVJUES FROM OUR SCHOOL H EMEN S OFI My most important holiday is Newros, this is the kurdish new year celebration from Irak, Iran and Syria. We celebrate it for three days and we go out and meet eachother and beg eachother for forgivness. We go out in to the nature. I eat Dolma, rice, lamb. For desert we eat dried apricot that we cook to a soup. The best with this celebration is to be out in the nature and feel the freshness of spring and the nature in bloom.

B IRGITTA K ARLSSON S TAAF Christmas is my favourite holiday, i celebrate it together with my family, parents and siblings and children. We are many people celebrating christmas together. We eat traditional swedish christmas food like ”janssons frestelse”, omelet, meatballs, herring, different kinds of sausages, smoked salmon, cheese, bread. And we drink christmas beer, ”julmust”, ”glögg” and ”snapps”. For desert we have a christmascheesecake, with jam and cream. The thing i like most with christmas is that the family has a chance to be together and that is a time to rest and find new strength.

L ARS -G ÖRAN P AULSSON The day i like most of all to celebrate is christmas eve. This is mostly because of my children. I celebrate this day together with my children. They get christmas gifts in the morning when they wake up and they play with them all day. In the afternoon we watch ”Kalle Anka” and eat dinner at the same time (you can not miss ”Kalle Anka”). And we also have a christmastree. Me and my kids eat ”Janssons frestelse”, this is a dish with fish (ansjovis) and potatoes, we also eat christmas ham, meatballs and a lot of christmas candy. What i like most about this celebration is to see the joy and happiness among my kids.
