Summary The Gift of the Magi is a tale of two young lovers who want to buy each other the perfect Christmas gift despite being low on funds. The story is told from the point of view of Della, the female of the pair. She sells her most valuable possession, her hair, to fund her lovers gift. She purchases a beautiful platinum chain for his most valuable possession, his gold watch. At the same time Jim, her lover, sold his watch to buy high quality combs for Della ’ s hair. This is revealed at the end of story in a sort of twist ending that is so predo- minate in O Henry ’ s writing. About O. Summary Despite failed gifts the story leaves you with a feel good feeling by describing the two as wise magi in the final paragraph. This ironic story gives the lesson of “ Its the thought that counts. ” The two were able to give up there most prized possessions for the happiness of the other. The tone of the story is hard to describe. It ’ s sort of a bland seriousness. There ’ s not a strong voice or sense of urg- ency but it ’ s not written in a relaxed tone either. Personally, I found the story to be an interesting and fun read. A cutesy tale of selflessness that gives warm, fuzzy feelings. About O.
