2 Overview UNMAS is the United Nations expert entity on explosive hazard threat mitigation, management and response. Enables UN peace operations to fulfill mandates (POC, reduction in armed violence, stabilization, national capacity building). Also operates in humanitarian emergencies, immediate post-conflict environments; supports early peace building, stabilization & recovery from conflict & socio-economic development.

3 Mine Action: more than mines, more than clearance Mine Action: mines, explosive remnants of war, cluster munitions, improvised explosive devices 5 Activities: - Survey & clearance - Risk education - Stockpile destruction (including weapons and ammunition management) - Victim assistance - Advocacy

4 UNMAS in the world UNMAS is deployed in 17 countries and territories under PKO, SPM or humanitarian mandates, including in: Abyei (PKO), Afghanistan (Hum), Central African Rep (PKO), Colombia (Hum), Cote d'Ivoire (PKO), Darfur (PKO), DRC (PKO-Hum), Iraq (SPM- Hum), Libya (SPM), Lebanon (PKO-soon Hum), Mali (PKO-Hum), Somalia (SPM), South Sudan (PKO), the Sudan (Hum), Syria (Hum), Palestine (Hum), Territory of W. Sahara (PKO). In PKOs and SPMs, UNMAS enables fulfillment of UN mandates & troop deployment, mobility and access: Advising: National authorities and UN Mission leadership Training: In-mission and pre-deployment specialized training Mentoring: TCCs and national authorities Equipping: Advice and procurement

5 Humanitarian Mine Action Humanitarian Mine Action (community based: protection, risk education, safe return of internally displaced/refugees, supports political processes) Humanitarian Emergencies (Gaza, Brazzaville, Syria) Victim Assistance (UN Victim Assistance Policy & Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities )

6 In addition to Security Council mandated deployments, UNMAS deploys at the request of the United Nations Secretary-General, his Representatives as well as Member States: Member States: Afghanistan, Sudan Secretary-General: Gaza (2014) SRSG: Iraq, Cyprus, Guinea Bissau D/SRSG: Iraq/Kurdistan RC/HC:Republic of the Congo, Colombia, Ukraine, Syria Requests for assistance (examples)
