What is an Informational Text? It is a text you read to gain information and not just to be entertained. It does not contain characters, plot or setting. Informational Text is to Literary Text as a Documentary is to a Blockbuster Movie. Wired, Popular Mechanics, Vogue, Esquire, Ebony, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, WALB, CNN, and Fox News are all examples of Informational Texts. Night, Romeo and Juliet, The Cask of Amontillado, Where the Red Fern Grows and Game of Thrones are all examples of Literary Texts.

What is the author’s claim (argument) and do they support it with evidence? -Where do they get their evidence? Does the author make a claim that is biased (opinion based) or unbiased (fact based)? Do they cite (make reference to) where they got their information?

Let’s do one together! The Nobel Peace Prize Alfred Nobel was an accomplished Physicist and Chemist, his most notable inventions include dynamite and ballistite. So it might come as a shock to know that one of the most prestigious awards for Peace is named after him. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five awards given in honor of Alfred Nobel. The other awards include awards in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Literature. The winner of the award is selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which consists of five members selected by the Parliament of Norway. How the award came about is kind of a funny story. In 1888, Alfred’s brother Ludvig died while vacationing in Cannes, France. A local newspaper got the two brothers confused and accidentally publish an obituary for Alfred Nobel, condemning his work in physics and chemistry for his inventions of dynamite and ballistite. In the obituary they exclaimed, “The merchant of death is dead!” This experience caused Nobel to reevaluate the legacy he was leaving behind to the world, and upon his death he donated the bulk of his estate to the establishment of the Nobel Prizes, the most notable of which is the prize for Peace. The Peace Prize is awarded to those who have, “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Some of the most notable laureates (winners) of the prize include: Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Barack Obama, and Malala Yousafzai.peace congresses
