Computerised Type Setting Type Setting is the layout of each page – the aim to make the page as easy to read. Issues they look at are: General layout Font used Font size.
4
Computerised Type Setting Further issues looked at are: Kerning (the space between each letter).
5
Computerised Type Setting Publishers will use DTP (Desktop Publishing Software) to help them with this. Once a page is typeset, it can be sent for plate making
6
Facsimile Transmission Two ways you can send a fax: Manually (fax machine to fax machine) Electronically (fax machine, sends scan to email/digital copy)
7
Advs of Digital Fax Saves time/trouble of going to the fax machine to retrieve/send faxes Equipment costs are lower as there is no need for a dedicated fax machine/phone line Running costs are lower
8
Facsimile Transmission Confidential faxes are more secure/on a manual fax any worker could pick it up Faxes can be downloaded remotely/don’t have to be in office to receive faxes. It is easier to send to many recipients at the same time.
9
After the editor agrees the page it needs to be sent to the printing plant. The page is printed with an image of the page is burnt onto light-sensitive film. The film is placed in a large fax machine to transfer to the plant. Facsimile Transmission
10
A negative image of the page is taken from the fax. UV light is passed through the film to expose onto printing plate. A chemical reactions causes an image to develop on the light-sensitive aluminum. Computerised Plate Making
