Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures 7-5.2 Classify matter as an element, compound, or mixture based on its composition.

Guessing Game Separate these items into two categories. Be able to explain why you sorted them the way you did.

Make a t-chart to separate the items below. Chocolate chips Iced Tea with Lemon M&Ms Orange jello Pizza Wendy’s frosty

Mixtures T-Chart Chocolate chips Orange jello Wendy’s frosty Iced Tea with Lemon M&Ms Pizza

Matter is…. anything that has ___________ and takes up _____________.

Can substance be separated by physical means? 1)filtration 2)sifting 3)evaporation -If yes, then it is a MIXTURE!

Mixtures Composed of two or more substances that retain (keep) their own individual properties and are combined physically (mixed together).

Does the mixture have uniform composition? In other words, when you look at it, do you see different parts or does it look evenly mixed? If it does have uniform composition, it is a HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE.

Homogeneous Mixtures AKA solution Uniform throughout Evenly mixed Cannot see differences (visibly distinguished) Particles of the substances are so small that they cannot be seen easily.

Mixtures that do not have uniform composition Heterogeneous Mixtures –Not uniform throughout –The component substances can be visibly distinguished

Exit Ticket: Copy and identify each as either heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture 1)skim milk 2)taco 3)trail mix 4)lemonade 5)yellow playdough

If it cannot be separated by physical means…. PURE SUBSTANCE

Elements Elements are pure substances that cannot be changed into simpler substances. Elements are composed of 1 kind of atom.

Can you imagine yourself putting something made from a slivery metal and a greenish- yellow, poisonous gas on your food? Compounds

Table salt is a chemical compound that fits this description. Even though it looks like white crystals and adds flavor to food, its components—sodium and chlorine—are neither white nor salty. Compounds

Compounds are pure substances that are composed of 2 or more types of elements that are chemically combined.

Compounds Compounds can only be changed into simpler substances (called elements) by chemical changes.

Compounds Two or more atoms can combine to form a molecule.
