4 Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. Metals are shiny. Metals are ductile (can be stretched into thin wires). Metals are malleable (can be pounded into thin sheets). A chemical property of metal is its reaction with water which results in corrosion.

5  Non-metals are poor conductors of heat and electricity.  Non-metals are not ductile or malleable.  Solid non-metals are brittle and break easily.  They are dull.  Many non-metals are gases. Sulfur

6  Metalloids (metal-like) have properties of both metals and non-metals.  They are solids that can be shiny or dull.  They conduct heat and electricity better than non-metals but not as well as metals.  They are ductile and malleable. Silicon

8  The alkali family is found in the first column of the periodic table.  They are shiny, have the consistency of clay, and are easily cut with a knife. They are the most reactive metals.  They react violently with water.  Alkali metals are never found as free elements in nature. They are always bonded with another element.

9  Elements that are reactive bond easily with other elements to make compounds.  Some elements are only found in nature bonded with other elements.  What makes an element reactive?  It has to do with how many electrons the atom has and where they are located

10  They are never found uncombined in nature.  Alkaline earth metals include magnesium and calcium, among others.

11 Transition elements have properties similar to one another and to other metals, but their properties do not fit in with those of any other family. Many transition metals combine chemically with oxygen to form compounds called oxides.

12  The elements in this family are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine.  They are the most active non-metals. They are never found free in nature.  They react with alkali metals to form salts.

13  Noble Gases are colorless gases that are extremely un-reactive.  Because they do not readily combine with other elements to form compounds, the noble gases are called inert.  The family of noble gases includes helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.  All the noble gases are found in small amounts in the earth's atmosphere.

14  The thirty rare earth elements are composed of the lanthanide and actinide series.  One element of the lanthanide series and most of the elements in the actinide series are called trans-uranium, which means synthetic or man-made.

15  All matter is composed of atoms and groups of atoms bonded together are called molecules.  Molecule: two or more atoms bonded together  Molecules made of different atoms are called compounds  Diatomic molecules are formed when only 2 atoms of the same element bond together  Example: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen

16  A chemical formula is an abbreviated way of describing a molecule  When two atoms of hydrogen bond with one atom of oxygen, we get a molecule of water….the chemical formula of water = H 2 0  AlBr 3 = 1 aluminum atom and 3 bromine atoms  Mg(OH) 2 = 1 magnesium, 2 oxygens, 2 hydrogens  4C 6 H 12 O 6 = 24 carbons, 48 hydrogens, 24 oxygens

17  New compounds are formed during chemical reactions, when molecules or atoms break up and form new combinations bonded together Example: CuO + H 2  Cu + H 2 O  The substance(s) on the left side of the arrow are called reactants  The substance(s) on the right side of the arrow are called products  The Law of Conservation of Matter states that you must end up with the same atoms you start with

18 Substances that are made from only one type of element are called pure substances. Substances that are made from more than one type of element bonded together are called compounds. Compounds that are combined physically, but not chemically, are called mixtures

19  Sodium is an element.  Chlorine is an element.  When sodium and chlorine bond they make the compound sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt.  Compounds have different properties than the elements that make them up.  Table salt has different properties than sodium, an explosive metal, and chlorine, a poisonous gas.

20  Hydrogen is an element.  Oxygen is an element.  When hydrogen and oxygen bond they make the compound water.  When salt and water are combined, a mixture is created. Compounds in mixtures retain their individual properties. The ocean is a mixture.

21 Homogeneous Mixture: the substances are mixed so well that it looks the same throughout Example: a solution (like salt water) In a solution, the solute is dissolved into another substance (the solvent) Example: in salt water, salt is the solute and water is the solvent Heterogeneous Mixture: the substances are NOT mixed well and you can often see the individual substances that make it up Example: trail mix

22  Mixtures can be separated by physical means.  Compounds can only be separated by chemical means.  Elements are pure substances. When the subatomic particles of an element are separated from its atom, it no longer retains the properties of that element.

23  Physical changes are those that may changes the way a substance looks but the substance is still the same substance (same chemical formula)  Examples: slicing, breaking, moving  Chemical changes are those that change the actual chemical makeup of the substance (new chemical formula) and can only occur if a chemical reaction occurs  Examples: burning, digesting, rotting
