IMPERIALISM The extension of one nation’s control over another Can be political, economic, or military control Often involves colonization Mother country can use raw materials and natural resources to make a profit Uses nationalistic feelings of people

NATIONALISM Deep loyalty to one’s country Fuels the desire to have overseas colonies If country’s size increases, so does its national pride Germany had consisted of 200+ states in the 1700’s Nationalism drew them together as one country Serbia was also very nationalistic

ALLIANCES France and Germany had been in conflict for many, many years Triple Entente (we call them the “allies”) France, Britain, Russia Triple Alliance (we call them the Central Powers) Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary

MILITARISM Belief in the power of strong armies and navies Building up armaments or weaponry Threatening to use arms and weapons Arms race in Europe Britain was known for its navy “Britannia rules the waves” Germany was building a navy to challenge Britain

Trigger event June 1914> Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Archduchess Sophia in Sarajevo in Austria-Hungary Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Black Hand, a Serbian terrorist group “Excellent sale of both horses.” “The shot heard round the world”

Trigger event Austro-Hungarian government blamed Serbia With support of it’s ally, Germany, delivered an ultimatum to Serbia Serbia wouldn’t agree to all demands (1), so A-H declared war on them Russia and France, sort of allies of Serbia, mobilized their forces Germany felt threatened, so ordered them to stop doing that. They refused so Germany declared war on Russia then France.

And the dominos continue to fall… Germany was planning to attack France by going through the small neutral country of Belgium. But Britain had signed a treaty with Belgium saying they would guarantee their neutrality, so when Germany invaded Belgium, Britain declared war on Germany
