Beginning of the War ❖ The foremost of all reasons for the war starting was the Cold War. ❖ This caused tension throughout the world between democracies and communist countries. ❖ America was in the middle of an all out anti-communist movement predominantly against the U.S.S.R (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). ❖ The biggest fear was that communism was beginning to spread to Southeast Asia.

Beginning of the War Cont. ❖ The Soviet Union and the U.S were way too strong to fight each other and risk an all out nuclear war. ❖ In a way the Vietnam War was almost a test of wits between the two superpowers. ❖ The U.S already had “special advisors” in Vietnam prior to the war starting. ❖ The actual date the U.S stepped into the war was March 8th 1965, by December 1965, over 150,000 troops were stationed in Vietnam.

Nations Affected ❖ Several nations were involved in the war, and some nations were affected because of the war. ❖ One of the nations that fought in the war was South Vietnam, who were backed by anti communist nations such as, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, known as the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). ❖ Nations affected span across the world, with the two major nations affected being The U.S.S.R and the U.S

Historical Personalities ❖ The United States President during the war was John F. Kennedy until he was assassinated, Lyndon B. Johnson took over. ❖ Ho Chi Minh was the leader of Communist Northern Vietnam. ❖ The U.S.S.R had Nikita Khrushchev whom brought on the communist expansion into Vietnam, and Leonid Brezhnev was the leader of the U.S.S.R during the Vietnam War.
