Vietnam and Foreign Rule Vietnam had been under French rule from the 1800’s During WWII the Japanese overran Vietnam. After WWII the French sought to take control of Vietnam again. Ho Chi Minh The Vietnamese were led by Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh Nationalist and Communist leader who had fought off the Japanese. Became a hero after the Indochina War. Would eventually lead North Vietnam.

Dienbienphu Unexpected victory that forced the French to leave Vietnam.

Vietnam Divided Vietnam becomes a part of the Cold War. Vietnam becomes a part of the Cold War. Communist North and “Democratic” South. Communist North and “Democratic” South. South Vietnam American backed Diem, but he proved to be unpopular with the people. He was viewed as corrupt and protested against. Many people from the South preferred Ho Chi Minh. Ngo Dinh Diem

Domino Theory The theory believed that if South Vietnam fell to Communism then other Southeast Asian countries would follow.

Viet Cong The National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) were the rebels attempting to over throw South Vietnam’s government. Resourceful soldiers that used guerilla warfare.

Guerillas Small groups of loosely organized soldiers who conducted surprise attacks.

The War Becomes Bleak The Tet Offensive turns many Americans against the war effort. Civilian deaths create opposition to the war. Protests begin to spring up all around the United States. The US cannot break the will of the Viet Cong.

The War Comes to an End

Khmer Rouge The Khmer Rouge murdered 1/4 of the entire population of Cambodia in under four years. The goal was for them to cleanse their country of the West through genocide in Cambodia. The Vietnamese drove out their leader, Pol Pot, and took control of Cambodia.
