What is happening nationally? Many state and district officials say textbook publishers are scrambling to catch up with the common standards and few, if any, materials that truly align are available. …. it's not simply a matter of flipping a switch to have instruction at all grade levels reflect the new standards. After all, a lot of math content builds on prior learning. Big Shifts Ahead for Math Instruction, Education Week, March 22, 2013

What is happening nationally? "You can't say, from one year to the next, we're going to go 100 percent common-core standards, because students aren't coming with the [prior knowledge] to embrace it,“… "Over the next several years, we're introducing them incrementally, building teacher capacity and student capacity." Big Shifts Ahead for Math Instruction, Education Week, March 22, 2013

What is South Dakota doing? Statewide professional development for ELA and Mathematics teachers K-12. Work groups disaggregated the Common Core Standards and writing kid friendly learning targets Work groups developed blueprints to help guide your instruction Work groups curated the best lessons on the web and aligning them to the common core standards Work groups analyzed the new SmarterBalanced assessments to assure they are well-developed and appropriate for our students.

Your Math Curriculum and the Common Core Standards Do you need help working with the new common core math standards? Are you stuck with a math curriculum that is not aligned to the Common Core standards? Will experience with the new K-12 math blueprints help guide you? Could you use Math Blueprints to build your own curriculum?

Learning Targets for Today Learn how to use the blueprint to: – Determine if your math curriculum materials are in alignment with the CCSS – See how you can adapt your current materials to align with the blueprint – Build your own curriculum

Four Corners—Where We Are Now? 1 = What? CCSS? 2 = I can talk the talk a little bit 3 = Understanding but not integrating 4 = Understanding and integrating  Common Core Standards  SMP  Blueprints

Blueprint Exploration http://sdccteachers.k12.sd.us/ Think about these questions as you explore: 1.Do you need help working with the new common core math standards? - How will the blueprint help? 2.Are you stuck with a math curriculum that is not aligned to the Common Core standards? – What steps can you take to align your materials? 3.Could you use Math Blueprints to build your own curriculum? How could you begin this process? Turn and Talk http://timer.onlineclock.net

Understand the CCSS Question 1: How did the blueprints help build understanding of the CCSS? Did you know…… – Each blueprint is a google doc – You can make a copy – You can change anything to make your own

Align using Blueprint Question 2: What steps will you use to align your materials with the blueprint or confirm that your curriculum aligns with the CCSS? Did you know…… – You can use the teacher notes to connect to your materials – You can fill your gaps with myOER resources

Build Your Own Question 3: How could you use the blueprints to begin building your own curriculum? Did you know…… – You can use Livebinders.com to build your own curriculumLivebinders.com – You can use instructional focus codes as your units

LiveBinders- BUILD!

Did we reach our Learning Targets? Learn how to use the blueprint to: – Determine if your math curriculum materials are in alignment with the CCSS – See how you can adapt your current materials to align with the blueprint – Build your own curriculum

The Future! "The essential question is not whether the common core can improve mathematics learning in the United States, but whether we, as a nation, have the commitment to ensure that it does.“ William Schmidt,Michigan State University distinguished professor and co- director of the university's Education Policy Center, Education Week, March 22, 2013

The Future! The common core offers the opportunity to revolutionize math instruction in this country, to improve student performance, to close the gap between the United States and its competitors, and to ensure that every American student has an equal opportunity to learn important mathematics content. But it is only a chance, and it is imperative that we seize it. William Schmidt,Michigan State University distinguished professor and co-director of the university's Education Policy Center, Education Week, March 22, 2013
