INTRODUCTION:-  Traditional electronic data interchange (EDI) has been evolving for approximately 25 years and has truly become the paperless environment.  EDI is a complicated mixture of three disciplines: business, data processing, and data communications.  Since EDI is commonly defined as the direct computer-to-computer exchange of standard business forms, it clearly requires a business process.  data processing is clearly necessary for application processing.  Data communication is then necessary for the exchange to take place. ORIGIN OF EDI  Industry groups began a cooperative effort to develop EDI standards in 1960s.  It was firstly used in the transport industry around 1960s in the US.  It was used by ocean, motor, air, and rail carriers.  About fifty thousand private-sector companies in the United States are currently using EDI. 5. THE EDI HOST  EDI can be implemented on a personal, mini, or mainframe computer.  PCS provide many companies with a low-cost entry into EDI.
