3 INTRODUCTION:-  Traditional electronic data interchange (EDI) has been evolving for approximately 25 years and has truly become the paperless environment.  EDI is a complicated mixture of three disciplines: business, data processing, and data communications.  Since EDI is commonly defined as the direct computer-to-computer exchange of standard business forms, it clearly requires a business process.  data processing is clearly necessary for application processing.  Data communication is then necessary for the exchange to take place. 4 ORIGIN OF EDI  Industry groups began a cooperative effort to develop EDI standards in 1960s.  It was firstly used in the transport industry around 1960s in the US.  It was used by ocean, motor, air, and rail carriers.  About fifty thousand private-sector companies in the United States are currently using EDI. Companies such as Federal Express, Eastman Kodak, American Airlines, Nike, Staples, NationsBank etc. SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING NAME OF STUDENT: Akshay Lal Ranjan REGD NO: 0901220225 DATE : 21/09/12 SLID NO: 04

5 THE EDI HOST  EDI can be implemented on a personal, mini, or mainframe computer.  PCS provide many companies with a low-cost entry into EDI. PC software is less expensive, faster to install, and often easier to use than mainframe or minicomputer packages.  However, it can be difficult to integrate PC systems with business applications that reside on other types of systems. 6 EDI COMMUNICATION  EDI communication system allows organization computers to send and receive data with the computers of external trading partners.  It typically involves a modem, communication software and some form of telecommunication link to the trading partners.  Communication link can be broadly divided into three categories: Direct, VAN, Internet. 8 2. VAN  VANS are independent companies that offer EDI services. By using the wide-area communications networks offered by VANS  companies can execute multiple communications with various trading partners by making just one phone call a day SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING NAME OF STUDENT: Akshay Lal Ranjan REGD NO: 0901220225 DATE : 21/09/12 SLID NO: 08

9 3. THE INTERNET  Many companies have begun to look to the Internet as a medium for transferring business transactions.  It provides businesses and government agencies a open, fast, cost effective and widely accepted and used environment.  But here both the sender and the receiver must install security software that prevents data from being altered as it passes through the Internet.  Finally, legal issues regarding who is responsible if a transmission gets lost on the Internet must be resolved. 11 EDI SERVER Install translation & mapping software on stand-alone machine or on an existing server. Old, spare pc works great for EDI. Trusted Link software requires Windows 98 or better NAME OF STUDENT :Akshay Lal Ranjan REGD NO: 0901220225 DATE :21/09/12 SLID NO: 11 SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

13 REGISTRATION  EDI system is registered in the Internet EDI server located at University of Texas- Austin.  The registration is free.  An E-Mail request has to be sent for registration  The confirmation from the EDI server is received with an username & its corresponding password NAME OF STUDENT :Akshay Lal Ranjan REGD NO: 0901220225 DATE :21/09/12 SLID NO: 13 SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

14 SECURITY Various kinds of security methods are being currently available for the EDI such as :  SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol)  PGP (Pretty Good Privacy)  RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) Security  Crypto Heaven. 16 CHARACTERISTICS OF EDI Requires dedicated EDI server Minimizes file size in the exchange Machine decipherable (difficult for a person to read) Focus on data and structure Not web based Many trading partners available NAME OF STUDENT :Akshay Lal Ranjan REGD NO: 901220225 DATE : 21/09/12 SLID NO: 16 SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

17 ADVANTAGE OF EDI More Secure than paper Cost savings Acknowledgements from receiving institution Speed Easy partner exchange each term Automated transfer articulation Small file size NAME OF STUDENT :Akshay Lal Ranjan REGD NO: 0901220225 DATE :21/09/12 SLID NO: 17 SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

18 SANJAY MEMORIAL INSTITUTE OF TCHNOLOGY DEPT OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING DISADVATAGE OF EDI  These may depend on the implementing technology and vary from vendor to vendor and these EDI tools cost much depending on the vendor and services availed.  The EDI technology is not served as a single standard and there are many standards came into existence and running alive to implement EDI.  Among them there are two popular standards named ANSI X12 and EDIFACT which rule most of the business EDI. 19 CONCLUSION  EDI is well established as effective technology got reducing costs and increasing efficiency.  EDI technologies are approximately the same age as Internet technologies.  In the past, the technologies have been mutually exclusive, but this is rapidly changing.
