CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of physical personal, social and emotional development in children’s learning Children’s personal, social and emotional development will support them in all areas of learning. Children will begin to understand how to manage their own emotions when surrounded by practitioners who can support them through a range of feelings. CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of physical personal, social and emotional development in children’s learning Children need to learn to be around others and to co-operate. As children grow and develop they will learn the concepts of turn-taking and sharing, this could be a toy, a bike or an adult’s time. CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Strategies to promote personal, social and emotional development In promoting the personal, social and emotional development of children the practitioner needs to know and understand the child. The role of the key person will be essential to this. Children need to be in an environment that is calm and consistent in its approach to children. CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Strategies to promote personal, social and emotional development When promoting personal, social and emotional development practitioners will: Listen – A good listener will be aware if the child is unwell or upset. They will know of children’s interests and can plan accordingly. Observe – Observations will inform the practitioner of children’s limitations, they will be able to plan for and avoid children’s frustrations. Model – A practitioner should model effective social and emotional skills. Consider all the benefits to the practitioner of each bullet point: listen, observe, model and teach. Consider all the benefits to the child of each. CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Strategies to promote personal, social and emotional development Practitioners will need to be aware of any change in a child’s life as this can affect their ability to deal with their feeling and emotions. If a child is going through a transition then they may need extra support with their personal, social and emotional skills. If a child is unwell they may become easily upset. If a child is worried or concerned about something then they may become withdrawn and not want to talk or join in.
