Introduction Knowledge Building ● Created by Marlene Scardamalia and Carl Bereiter ● Describes what a community of learners needs to accomplish in order to create knowledge. ● Puts a greater emphasis on collaborative work rather than individual. ● Encourages students to see themselves and their work as part of a bigger picture. ● Students are concerned with real problems in the real world. ● Students are encouraged to create higher level concepts. ● Students themselves find their way in order to advance.
3
Theory of Knowledge Building ● What is Knowledge Building? Knowledge building is an innovative theory in regards to how to approach educating the “new learner.” Emphasis on collaborative rather than individual inquiry and discovery. Notes the tentative nature of empirical laws. Attempts to refashion education to en-culture youth into this knowledge-creating civilization and find there place in it.
4
Pedagogy of Knowledge Building ● Knowledge Building is community based and collaborative. ● Knowledge Building is an idea improvement. ● Knowledge Building is about asking the questions how and why- “the knowledge of.”The act of doing! ● Knowledge Building believes understanding is emergent and is not finalized.
5
Classroom Implementation ● Emphasis on Experimentation and Inquisition ● Through the use and interpretation of authoritative information. ● Reflects epistemological awareness ● Allows time for iterations. ● Incorporates the role of technology For example: The Knowledge Forum
6
Assessments of and Benefits for the Learner ● Increases Student Reflection and Feedback ● Promotes Life-long Learning ● Cultivates a Social Community of Learners
7
Conclusion Knowledge Building ● “The driving force is not so much the individual interests of children as their desire to connect with what is most dynamic and meaningful in the surrounding society.” (p.113) ● “It requires a belief that students can deliberately create knowledge building and that is a legitimate part of the civilization-wide effort to advance knowledge frontiers.” (p.113) ● Overall, Knowledge Building takes a sociocultural perspective on humancomputer interactions, seeks to advance the process of education in keeping with new trends in the technological exchange of knowledge, and encourages a less hierarchical model of learning, one based on flexible organizations of small teams.

Our Knowledge Forum Our Thought Process Online Bullying ● This topic of online bullying keeps popping up for me. I took a class on bullying a while back, and what we learned was cyber- bullying was sad and disturbing. I also know, personally, of a young girl who was bullied online and off so badly that she eventually switched schools. Her mother and I had numerous conversations about the topic and the problems her daughter was having, but could never seem to come up with any solid solutions. ● A couple of weeks ago during the online discussion a few students mentioned how technology enables students to engage in online bullying. My knowledge about online bullying is limited, but I have seen news reports recently that mention how it is dangerously affecting the lives of students who are, in fact, being bullied. ●

Our Knowledge Forum The Journey to Our Discovery Educational Resources and Reflection ● http://stopcyberbullying.org/ http://stopcyberbullying.org/ ● http://www.educational-resources-store.com/cyber-bullying.aspx This is a website for books and other materials on the subject of cyberbullying. http://www.educational-resources-store.com/cyber-bullying.aspx ● htt://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T38-9OCDrP4 ● http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugzYBOxrfz4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugzYBOxrfz4 ● In my efforts to become more knowledgeable about the topic, I researched online bullying and came across this article: http://www.besafeonline.org/English/bullying_online.htm. In this article I learned the ways to detect potential bullying threats and how can report the attacker through contacting their email provider. I also found out that there is an email tracking system that people can download in order to find their attackers. This curiosity and search highlighted other articles that provided useful information on this subject area. The website http://www.childline.org.uk/Pages/Home.aspx offers children an outlet to express their feelings and concerns, which may diffuse a situation before it starts. I think these are all valuable resource and I'm glad it is available for children to access. http://www.childline.org.uk/Pages/Home.aspx ● Just recently I came across this website, http://cyberbullying.us/index.php. It is loaded with resources and links to other publications. It also has a blog section along with some testimonies from some teens who were either bullied themselves or did the bullying. I believe this website would be helpful to educators, parents, students, or anyone else who has experienced cyber-bullying in one form or another.
