C HANGE IN SHAPE OF BRASSICA IN DIFFERENT GROWING CONDITIONS Koshi High school, Fukui, Japan Ibe Misaki Fujita Wakana Maegawa Akihiro Maeda Chikako
2
PURPOSE There are many species of Brassica. But, the same species can change to different shapes in different growing environments. Research the change in shape by growth condition. Contribute to production efficiency as crops
3
RESULTS OF 2011 Humidity Temperature Daylight Broccoli Positive correlation Cauliflower Positive correlation Cabbage Positive correlationNegative correlation Kohlrabi Positive correlationNegative correlation Kale Chinese kale Negative correlation Brussels sprouts Negative correlationPositive correlation Positive correlation is ・・・ Humidity rises Negative correlation is ・・・ Humidity rises
4
Research ~ change in shape in different areas ~ 〈 Study area 〉 Kanto area Meikei Gakuen, Ibaraki Mito Daini High School, Ibaraki Hokuriku area Koshi High School, Fukui
5
Cabbage Brussels sprouts KohlrabiKale Chinese kale Broccoli Cauliflower Brassica in our experiments
6
How we grew them ① Plant 10 seeds per dish ② Transfer to small pots and grow them indoors ③ Grow them outdoors when three or four true leaves have formed ④ Measure length and width when length becomes 20mm Length width
7
How to create the Graph ① Vertical axis is Length, Horizontal axis is Width. Create the Scatter plot. ② Create the line of best fit. 「 The slope of the line of best fit = length÷width 」
8
Result The slope of the line of best fit and environmental factors
9
Result The slope of the line of best fit and humidity Humidity and Daylight hours Consistent with ①② Cauliflower Kale Not consistent with ① ② Broccoli Cabbage Kohlrabi Chinese kale = Affected by daylight hour Table2 ①「 Mito 」 -「 Fukui 」 ②「 2010Fukui 」 -「 2010Saga 」 Consistent Temperature difference 1℃ 1.3 ℃ Humidity difference 8.4 % 7.6 % Daylight hour difference -1.5hour-0.1hour Broccoli -0.1321 Negative - × Cauliflower 0.0797 -- ○ Cabbage -0.0109 - Positive × Kohlrabi -0.2584 Negative Positive × Kale -0.078 -- ○ Chinese kale -0.1493 Negative - ×

◎ Cauliflower Less affected by environmental factors. ◎ Cabbage When humidity rises, the leaves tend to be wider When daylight hours rises, the leaves tend to be longer ◎ Kohlrabi When humidity and temperature rise, the leaves tend to be wider When daylight hours rise, the leaves tend to be longer Considerations Trends in the change of shape
12
Challenges and Prospects for the future ① Analysis of change in shape and environmental factors in Broccoli, Chinese kale and Kale ※ Find the trends in change of shape in all 7 species ② Effect of light intensity ※ Natural light and Natural light + Artificial light
